Is there any book / manual / web page that explains what went off in hl1??? Theres just a few bits I wanna be clear off before I start hl2 again.

Ok.

Ive done a bit of reading and its starting to make sense. Just a couple of questions i got if someone could kindly answer....

I understand that 'the disaster' opened up this portal to xen and aliens started teleporting in. Then the 'government' which I assume is the g-man??? sends in troups to stop things getting out of the lab and invading earth??.... am i right so far?

What i wanna know is why do these troups want to kill gordan freeman so badly? I read that they especially dont want gordon to get out? Whys he so important???

What i also dont understand is who is this seven hour war between? earth and the xen aliens or earth and the troups? why would the troups wanna fight earth? arnt they the earths government. Surely theyd just wanna stop these aliens getting out of black mesa then jobs a good un earth is saved???

lol... confusing stuff.

if someone could explain it to me that would be great...

Hi Steameh, it's been a while since i last played the original, but i think i remember it well enough, so let's see, the troops were sent in to do a cover-up job, to stop the aliens from taking over and to silence anyone who were witness to the events that happened at Black Mesa. G-Man as far as i can remember was the man responsible for the troops arrival, though i might be wrong i'm not completely sure. As for Gordon, the troops were being slaughtered by him left right and center, so naturally once the remaining troops learned of their fellow teammates demise at his hands they would talk about killing him throughout the game.

The combine are different, they are something of a "police" force employed to keep order in City 17.

No, the half-life 1 troopers are normal marines from earth.

The HL1 Marines are implied to be American. See Opfor for details. It's also implied that the Gman sent the marines in.

The Combine metrocops and troops are mechanically modified humans led by the Combine, which is apparently an alien force that wants Earth's resources for something.

So to sum it up, we have several distinct groups: Earth forces (Marines and later the resistance), Xen aliens (Alien slaves/Vortigaunts and Alien Grunts, note that killing the Nihilanth at the end of HL1 freed the Vortigaunts from slavery), the Combine (Metrocops, Troops, Striders, Gunships, etc), and the Gman (Gordon.)

so basically the Combine just appeared and took Earth by total shock and thats the 7 hour war and Earth got pwned. So that Dr. Breen was the Administrator for Black Mesa and he made a deal with the Combine that Earth surrenders. Thats why no ones fricken happy around city 17 then.

Well im gonna start half-life 2 again tonight, things might make alot more sence this time round plus im going to pay more attention to detail.
