:frown: I have recently purchased Half-Life2, I have downloaded the files including steam. But i have been having the same problem that many others have had while attempting to launch the game, when i launch the game it seems to be loading, but then the cancel button fades away and the pop-up closes. This problem is occuring on all the half-life2 games including CS source. I really want to start playing my game, as it cost me heaps of money (A$89.95). It would be appreciated if someone kind enough could sort out the problem as it would mean alot to me.

^^Sorry i forgot to add my specificications:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1 Build 2600)
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz
Memory: 480MB RAM
Page File: 392MB used, 729MB available
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
Card name: SiS 650_651_M650_M652_740
Resolution: 800 x 600 (32bit) (60hz)
Driver Version: 6.13.0010.2130 (English)

I have no idea how to update my graphics card or sound card (that may be the problem)

I have done a variety of things to get Hl2 to work eg. download latest Direct x files, delete some files in steamapps etc.

hopefully someone can help me

I'm having the same problem... Steam runs fine, but HL2 games will not launch. I can see the hl2.exe running for about 3 seconds in task manager, then it abruptly stops without warning. I've noticed recently that explorer.exe is no longer in my list of tasks, but windows seems to be running well. Maybe that has something to do with the hl2 problem? I'm running:

Win XP Home Edition - service pack 2 updated
Pentium 4 - 2.4 GHz
1 GHz RAM
Direct X 9.0c
Radeon mobility 9000 - catylist driver version 8.205.0.0

This is incredibly frustrating, thank you for any help in advance...

See if you can upgrade your memory and video card.
You don’t have to get flashy expensive V-Card just get something little bit better than what you have (An onboard) preferably Nvidia or ATI, upgrade memory and sound card.
The rest of your PC seems to be compatible to HL2 system spec.

Good Luck.

Weird heh? Without the Explorer.exe (Windows Explorer) I wonder how your PC is running and stable. Maybe that’s why HL2 isn’t running.
Laptops heat up pretty faster than desktop when using it for game or been turned on for a while.
If this isn’t your case, see if all of your games are up to date and your firewall isn't blocking steam to access the Inter.

Good Luck.

So everything is updated, including the sound drivers?
Normally your card should be able to handle it, so that shouldn't be a problem. Is the game also set to automatically update?
Left-click on Steam tray icon.
Select "Games".
Click on the "My Games" tab.
Right-click on the game you want to check.
Select "Properties".
Click on the "Updates" tab.
Is it set to automatically update?

maybe is a probleme whit somekind of firewall i only suposed but your firewall can block the acess to Half-life2 package.

nope, i have all half life 2 files on the exceptions list on my firewall and anti-virus -> thx though

man i just bought this, exact same problem. about to uninstall and try again.

specs
win 2003 server
dual opteron
2gb ram
tyan s2895 motherboard
6800gt latest drivers
onboard sound

tried disabling the firewalls, nothing working
i noticed that there were a lot of blank pages during the install, all the user agreements were blank, all the info screens are blank, none of the web links on my install of steam seem to work

ok fixed it (a while back but ive been too busy to update)

it seems that when i updated the drivers for my 6800gt that the setting:
Right_click_Desktop>properties>settings>advanced>troubleshooting>"hardware accelleration" slider had been turned down to "none". putting it back up to "full" sorted all my problems instantly.

hope this helps others

Gay, Problem still not solved, is there any way i can contact steam Apart from sending them an email, i wanna give them a piece of mind.
