I've basically started this thread to discuss the fact that a lot of Half-Life's mythology, story, quirks, and methods revolve around the fact that it is a game. It seems clear to me that Valve not only cleary want you to know this, but shoves it in your face many a time.

It seems that a lot of you get pissed off about whether or not Gordon wears a helmet, whether he would survive without the HEV suit, whether or not his crowbar is THE crowbar, etc, etc, etc... how it all fits together and whatnot.

Most people would say "its just a game... don't even worry about it." I say it IS a game, and that's why everything fits together!

For instance, who exactly does Barney represent in HL2? Clearly not Barney Calhoun from Blue Shift, because HL2 Barney owes you a beer and often remarks "Just like old times, eh Gordon?" while fighting. I don't seem to recall Barney Calhoun in Blue Shift ever fighting alongside Gordon. Although you could easilly make the case that Barney Calhoun DID owe Gordon a beer at some point and is merely remarking that they both fought a lot in BMRF, I think that Barney in HL2 represents ALL of the Barneys. He's not necessarilly Calhoun, he's not necessarilly the one by the door, he's just the conglomoration of all of the BARNEYs rolled into one BARNEY. You could make the same case with Dr. Kliner and all of the other Glasses-wearing scientists in HL1, even though Kliner is specifically referred to as your mentor in the HL1 manual.

Think about this... they could have easilly made HL2 the most realistic, interactive game ever with user-selected dialogue trees and a player reflection and all of that... but instead they chose to remain true to a lot of the things that made HL1 a fun, entertaining GAME. You never talk, you never really see your body, and of course, you can still climb up a ladder backwards while holding firing a two-handed weapon.

And, the game accounts for this. "You're a man of few words." Alyx remarks. "Eli was right about you" says a resistance after you hang around for a while when they insist you rush. Everyone pretty much takes for granted the fact that you never talk, that you jump on top of computer monitors for no reason, that you can take headshots, legshots and not die, or even slow down, repair yourself to full health with a few bandages and green goo, and of course, pull off the events in HL1 and HL2 all by yourself with no food, bathroom breaks, or even necessarrilly breaks from moving! Why? You're Gordon Freeman! You're a video game character! You might as well be GOD... while everyone else in the game has to obey the laws of nature and get injured or die when they get shot and rest periodically, you can long-jump circles around the Combine forever and never get tired.

Its like they take as realistic a world as they can and put an arcade game hero right in the middle of it. No wonder you're a legend! Imagine how YOU would feel about some guy who in WWII defeated MechaHitler and all of the German gernerals (i.e. Wolfenstein 3d)

So is it really your crowbar from BMRF? Of course it is! Oh, there were actually TWO crowbars in HL1 (one after you got beaten by the troops), who gives a shit? It's a game, and through some magical occurance in the Half-Life saga, your crowbar was found and returned to you.

How can you NOT be wearing a mask and still survive all that you do, complete with digital readout? How can you be wearing a mask when everyone in HL1 recognizes you by name? It doesn't matter! It's a game, and games have such odd occurances and Valve wants you to know that.

So... did I miss anything? How else did Valve incorperate the fact that HL is a GAME above all else into their story?

Good gaming...

They are all rolled up into one.

I agree. Well said.

The mask is tricky, 'cause if he was wearing it in Black Mesa then it would protect him from things that wold normally kill someone (like radiation). However, no one would be able to recognize him.

I like the Half-Life series because you can debate for hours on even the tiniest things. I'll try and come up with some more.

I thought of a few more...

Barney makes fun of you for having a PhD MIT even though all you do in any experiment in HL1 or 2 to is throw a switch. Valve is kinda poking fun at the original HL and kinda poking fun at the fact that your a video game hero, nothing more.

Alyx says she found you outside being "a bit of a troublemaker." Kleiner agrees, saying that chaos seems to follow in Gordon's wake. This, I feel, is another hint at Gordon's true video-game-hero status.

In the same light, I found this article particularly amusing:

truely humourous.

And another thing that shows its a game, is that I definatley killed almost all of the barneys and all of the kleiners and all of the vances, yet they still came back in version 2

LOL! That "Gordon's Disabilities" article is one of the funniest I've EVER read!

No, I think there was just one... the soldiers beat you up, and chucked you and your crowbar away :D

and another thing... people debate and speculate about weapon types and statistics... theres a thread here about the RPG's real world model, and people complained about HL1's MP5 having an M203 on the bottom.. hell.. has everyone forgotten back in quake 2 where the machine gun was called "Machinegun" and the rocket launcher was called "Rocket Launcher".
You dont even need real names or a coherent plot to have a damn good game. the fact hl2 is damn good in both departments only makes it better!

Also the vortigorts

"How many are there in you? Whose hopes and dreams do you encompass? "
"Could you but see the eyes inside your own , the minds in your mind , you would see how much we share. "

These probably have somthing to do with the very cool storyline as well, but heh, it can work on two levels :)

We "share" with the vortigornts, because (as the theory goes) they have a hive mind that they return to when they die and get reincarnated. (this makes sense if you read all the things that the vortigont in the placey where you get the gun on your boat says)
Just like we, the players, return to "the real world" (occasionly..) when we die and reincarnate ourselves.

Good theory?

I don't see why you care. What's so wrong with discussing Half Life's storyline? Valve obviously does care or else they would have never hired Marc Laidlaw in the first place, they would've just thought of it themselves and we'd be playing Doom or Quake all over again. Ok, so people get a little over obsessive with "Why is the military using MP5s in the first place! Where's the assault rifles?!" or "No, its a Stinger missile launcher! Nah uh! Its an israeli RPG!" People like realism. Nothing wrong with that.

Point is, yes, its a game. But, its a game with a good plot and people like to analyze it. I do it myself, many others have. To me, plots are the only thing keeping games even worth playing. If a game doesn't have a plot or a good one, I most likely wouldn't bother with it.

Clearly you misinterpret me. I can safely claim to love Half-Life's story more than any other man, and there's nothing I love more than discussing possible theories, etc. My point is that a lot of the "discrepencies" are there on PURPOSE to people of the fact that its a game!

Like my above examples... Walking up a ladder backwards while firing a two handed weapon... never talking... perfect aim while longjumping... Alyx referring to you as a trouble maker... etc. etc. etc... they are all there not because HL2 has a bunch of unrealistic things and need to be explained by plottwists (i.e. Gordon Freeman's high blood iron content lets him magnetize to ladders)

They don't need to be explained, they were written in to make it more of a game!

Basically, I feel that they take as realistic a world as they can, complete with dynamic characters and everything, and put an arcade game hero right in the middle of it. GENIUS!

Yeah but if you want to immerse yourself in the storyline, it's cos the G-man is watching.... he guides your bullets....

The thing about Barney. The expansion packes do not follow the story at all so should just be ignored. If you do this Barney could easily be THE Barney

{Standing Ovation as well}

That was possibly the best essay i've ever read.

I see... no wonder your weapon automatically aims at the enemies in easy mode. cool. :smoking:

Yes i agree, especially the part about people argueing over what real world weapon counterparts. I hate that.
