Hi,
I'm only 14 so I didn't play the first Half-Life when it came out and I don' really want to play it now (I'm one of those people that believes graphics are as important as gameplay). So, I was wondering if anyone could sum up HL's story for me so that I can fully enjoy HL2's. Also, if you could explain some of the characters (I have no idea who Dr. Breem and Eli Vance are for example), and what Xen is, that'd be great.

The best I can sum it up is

Ooo eee ooo ah ah, ting tang walla walla bing bang, ooo eee ooo ah ah ting tang walla walla bing bang

There is a site with the story on, if I remember rightly, but I tried a search and came up with.....nothing :(

Gordon Freeman is an MIT graduate who is offered a job at the Black Mesa Research facility after being recomended by one of his old professors, Dr. Kleiner.

The game starts as Gordon is travelling to the Sector C test labs at the Black Mesa facility. You're late for an experiment, analysing a crystal sample. The experiment goes wrong, and you're briefly transported to an alien world, Xen. You get back, and the facility is badly damaged, aliens are teleporting in. Eli (one of your colleageues, but he isn't named in the first game) tells you to get to the surface for help.

Eventually, you make it to the Lamba complex at the other end of the base. The scientists there give you a mission: a powerful being in Xen is holding the portal open in order to invade Earth (he's retaliating against the human incursions into Xen, which you discover had been going on for a while before the accident) and you have to kill him in order to seal the portal.

After doing the deed, you come face-to-face with the mysterious g-man, who's been following you all through the game. He offers you a deal, work for him, or die.

Half-Life 2 naturally assumes you took his offer of employment.

Anyways, if you get the time, it's well worth playing through Half-Life. One of the joys of it is how subtly the story is told. Like learning about the excursions into Xen, or in the chapter "Questionable Ethics" where you find they've been experimenting on captured creatures from Xen.

depending on which Steam package u purchase, u can get HL in Source.. so that means, before u actually start playing HL2 u can play HL:Source (which i might add is a huge upgrade :p ) and enjoy the storyline more than anyone here could ever make it.

go play HL1, i just replayed through it again while we wait, its STILL a good game. infact its an awesome game, with some good graphics (taking into acount how old it is)

Go play it.. honest it wont disapoint, once you get into it thats it your sucked in like a zombie under a barnacle.

I follow your advice and started playinh HL1 over Steam bout 30 minutes ago and, surprisingly, I'm enjoying it even though the graphics, sound, etc. aren't that great anymore. Anyways, thanks for the info guys, I'll probably play through Half-Life now.

You wont regret it. It is dated, but its still an adventure. Nice sig, btw :p ..a bit big tho :)

lol, I just had to put that in my sig when I saw it, classic! how do I make it smaller? it automatically spaced the quotes like that.

How can anyone think that graphics are more important then gameplay....
What is the point of playing a game that is utter crap, if it looks pretty. I suggest you play some classic games and then tell me if your opinion still holds.

Heck, I still play the first two Fallout games on a regular basis. As stated, graphics really don't mean a thing if the game is crap.

The easiest way to shrink it down would just be to not use the quote tags. Like I did with my Deerhoof quote.

i didnt say that graphics were more important than gameplay, i mean i wouldnt play a game that looks pretty but plays crap. I'd rather play a game that has good graphics AND good gameplay. When a game has good gameplay but bad graphics, I dont usually play it through as its just not pleasing to the eye.
