Help a newbie??

I have activated my ATI voucher copy of HL2, and must admit that it is my first attempt at a FPS. Starting a new game, I can only get as far as the streetscape in the city, and have yet to see a weapon I can use, or a means of obtaining one. All I have is a set of crosshairs, it seems. I am using the WSAB keys and the mouse, and can see nothing to help me in the Options menu, which I have set to Default. Any advice, or links to a tutorial site , or similar? My age (70) may have something to do with it!

Keep going, you'll eventually run into barney at some point and he will throw you a crowbar. Then, beat up a combine and get a gun .

How do I get out of the town square? I have tried everything, but can not get through blue force field. No good going back to the railway station, as far as I can see.

I know where your coming from, I let my friend grab a hold of my PC and he'd never played a game in his life actually (besides the classic Nintendo). I told him to use WSAD, and he was pressing the buttons like he was going to break the keyboard. You really can't be that tense while first maneuvering through the city. Also, a good thing to know about this game is that so much is possible, as in, things can take the keenest of logic to figure out.. but in some cases the idiotic mind will help.

If you right click Half Life 2 in the steam games list, you will see somethng that says manual. I dont know if it helps but check it out.

look around, should be a set of ladders to the right on the side of a building at the start of an alley way as you come out of the station. the walkway is a side access to a building I think, but yeh this is what HL is like... if you cant find places to go, look around in every crook and cranny v carefully. up down left and right, dont be afraid to look.

You can never go through the force fields (unless you turn them off). As clarky said you gotta go up the ladder, then from up there jump over a fence (iirc)

Thanks so far for the info. I keep looking on the Steam servers, but it seems that so far nobody is playing HL2 online? Plenty of HL servers, but no HL2? Why is this?

Come on, that has nothing to do with it. Just walk around for a while and enjoy the city. The guards will beat you up a bit but the game won't let you die (at least, not until you have a weapon). If you try and avoid the guards you'll find you are led towards a certain place (I can't even remember where I walked but I figured, if there's anything I missed I'll do that the next time). Barney the guard will eventually toss you a crowbar.

Some hints:

• press the E key and you pick up the item that is in front of you (wine bottles, crates, plastic, etc). Press it again and you drop it.
• Options -> Keys gives you a list of what keys and actions. If it seems like the rest of us do this without thinking it is because the key layout is the same as in Halflife-1 and Counterstrike, and we have played those for six years.
• If anything annoys you, smash it with the crowbar.

Now admit it, you're not really 70, are you?

There is no HL2 multiplayer. Only Counter Strike: Source.

I appreciate the tips, and assure you that I was born in South Australia on 25th March, 1934. I build my own computers, but have resisted gaming until now!!

if you can't pass something simple, like walking around and climbing a ladder, you will get nowhere later on in the game.

Give him a break.
