Help please

I registered yesterday. I registered my CD key, waited 30 minutes for a download update, was allowed to play for awhile yesterday. Today I get the message...THE GAME IS NOT READY TO BE PLAYED IN OFFLINE MODE....

I cannot log into Steam as I get a message that the user name is invalid.

What is going on with this?

Loads of people are. Not me though. Don't know if there are any solutions...
