Man, just because we don't have internet connections while playing, we suffer. I managed a dial-up connection and installed the game, but I can't play HL2:DM or CS:S, because the former needs to be downloaded, and the latter needs to be upgraded. How long would that take? I have a good connection for the neighboring computer, and I managed these two on it. But now, the other computer has only HL2. I have one steam account to solve the problem.

First off, I don't want any physical suggestions (like switch the two computers), only technical software solutions. Can I simply copy the games from the first computer to the second, and avoid all this waste of time? And can I convince steam that I have them legally installed?

Go to:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\ in this folder you will find a series of .gcf cache files. Just copy these files over to the computer that needs updating and install them in the same place (File path may vary).

Also if you right click on any game in your Games list and click on properties, there is a button in that window to Backup game...

From there you can choose to backup the fiiles. They can then be burned onto CD/DVD and then installed on the other computer.

Simple :)

Incidentally, it shouldn't take all that long to download HL2 DM. It's around 50MB so it would take a few hours. Probably around the same with CS:S too :)

Doesn't worky. It still insists on updating. I didn't try backing up, because I'm expecting the same result. Now because my computer crashed while running HL2 due to heavy npc spawning (wasn't me), even HL2 is asking to be updated. Damn steam.

When I leave the house, I'm not going to have an internet connection for maybe 4 months or so. Can't imagine how I'll survive that if HL2 stops working.

I'm really getting desperate, what the **** am I supposed to do?
