what does the socket mean (socket 940) and what is ecc registered? how do these things effect the comp. btw, what does oem mean?

Socket 940 is a socket for a processor. Specifically a 64 bit athlon processor.
ECC registered is a type of ram.
OEM is basically all the parts of whatever you're ordering, except without the retail packaging. Just the product basically.

Here is a general FAQ about ECC RAM

Basically, the new Athlon 64's use that new type of RAM.

ok, i know all that, im asking how it effects performance, and what the difference is from other types.
