I know that Half-Life 2's MP mode is rather 'secret'... but do you guys think Valve plans to 'announce' the MP mode? Or is it just going to be the people who buy it on Day One (tm) will find out first?

I think they'll leave it as a secret until it ships..

Why would they leave it a secret until it ships? That makes no sense. Why would anyone buy a product that they don't fully know about?

"Psst, hey, uh, wanna buy this bag of...stuff? It's only $50. And if you don't like it - too bad. You can't return it. I won't be on this corner next week..."

Some people like the surprise. Other people want to make sure they're getting their moneys worth. Though i certainly don't go and buy a car or a computer or a DVD with a blindfold on for the surprise....

Everyones different.

...more suspense that way? I was thinking more until it ships, as in when it ships they release the final splash on information, a few days before HL2 is available for purchase.. not that the day it hits stores they'll spill the beans

Sorry, it's late, I'm tired, probably not making as much sense as I should be making

Maybe they'll show something on multiplayer at E3

Who says they have to tell us? They could just leave it up to the reveiwers to tell us stuff about the game. They're just gonna make it.

well theres gotta be some mention of whats going on with MP. U cant just hope people will be like whatever @#% it, gimme that game. If i wasnt a big fan of hl i wouldn't buy a game i wasn't aware of its online play.

if hl is ne thing to go by everyone knows its gunna be great... i think around 88% of all online gaming is baced on HL mods and HL... but even if it is rubbish there are going to be so many mods and addons coming out for it it wont really matter..

Yeah just let the reviewers do it, that way the people who buy the game without reading any reviews will have a suprise.

I think it would be in Valve's best interest to announce. Single player is a good element of any game, but what's going to keep it selling will be the Multiplayer. If no-one knows what the MP is by release date, they'll get a loss of sales I'll bet.

Whats going to keep hl2 selling almost has nothing to do with hl2, its all about the Mod community that will keep the game going. HL1 was great and all, but not many people kept playing hl1 multiplayer, it was almost all about the mods.

Expectations for HL2 multiplayer will be high because of that, though.

I agree you will probably need some official word on the subject, They dont have to say anything until Day 3, all the people who want suspense will have pre-ordered or buy on day one, and they can get the surprise, by Day 3 you can announce it and the rest of the world can go "oh look, Valve did actually do a Multiplayer side, now I can buy the game". Suits both people, I'm in group 1, so I want to have a surprise :),

(BTW I said Day 3 so people who preordered first class and dont have "on release day" delivery dont get told :P, and I answer your reply with "you can't wait forever to please everyone".

I think hl2 multiplayer will be just like hl1. I would like that.

hmm.... I’ll give you $45

First thing, single player part of games is what makes games like Half-life popular. If the single player sucked, nobody would have bought it and that means no mods.

Second thing, I bet the reason why Valve won't say anything about MP is that they probably don't know what the MP portion of the game will include. :O

The single player made HL popular, the Online Mods made it infamous...

I'm expecting the multiplayer element will be unveiled at E3, hopefully with some kick ass new movies, a tech demo and maybe some sharper grittier textures (like stalker).

I'm sure they will show off all the potential of the MP and provide a great big filthy demonstration...

Valve is producing an engine as much as they are a game.

You can bet all you own that Valve will do their best to showcase all elements of the engine and game before release as to attract more contracts with game development teams. Multiplayer is the wave of the future, and as such Valve needs to show that their engine can handle multiplayer well.

Expect them to offer some insight on the multiplayer as soon as it's ready to be shown. As the common opinion is, Valve really didn't have much done on Half-Life 2 towards the end of last year. Chances are they're still working hard on even getting core features like the network code (easily the most important tech feature in the game for thousands of gamers) running smooth. Once they get things working well enough, expect big hoopla. E3 is rather far away, at least relative to the release date. Unless Valve is really dragging their ass, expect big news on the multiplayer before then.

However, I think it was Lombardi who said that Valve won't be releasing any new info until E3 this year.

And IGN's new screens don't count, they're from the old E3 video :)

One word: E3. If they show single player it won't be as impressive. I wager an early version of HL2's multiplayer shall be shown. As well as TF2.

Fine... how much money are you willing to bet on that? (I need to make some easy money)

i'm in it for the sp all the way, i could care less if the mp ends up being only deathmatch with one map

Ok, for those of you who wouldnt buy the game because you dont know what the mp is like, then the people who would buy it, being sure it would be awesome, would buy it the first day and tell everyone who didnt buy it how awesome/bad it is. I think that the mp will probably be shown at E3, maybe TF2. and even if all this goes to shit(the mp sucks) Im sure the mod community would have no problems patching it up. ;)
