Will we HAVE to use steam to play HL2 online? Steam lowers my FPS when i play games such as CS or HL online. only about 5 FPS.. but that 5 FPS will matter with HL2 i'm sure.. so will we have to use steam?

Yes. Steam is the backbone of HL2.

You can, however, play single player HL2 without Steam. This is, of course, assuming it's done in the same fashion as CZ.

yep, what shuzer said, although they havent made it clear whether single player will work ala CZ or not.

Yes you need steam, the only bad thing will be that sometimes when you close steam, you cant play HL2 and will have to get back online.

Wait, you need to be online to play half life 2!?

would be stupid to use steam... LLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS of gamers dont even have internet at home..

No. You won't need an internet connection with the single player only version of HL2.

However, it's the general consensus (thus far), that the SP + MP version will require Steam authentication. No one is sure how exactly this will work.

As for needing to be online, no, you won't. Steam has an offline mode now.

you need to be online sometime.. or else steam will not work offline

aren't we in the age where most every1 who owns a pc, also have internet even if it is juno or netzero.

Well, yes. You have to initially download and install updates online.. but after that, you can get offline and play in offline mode.

Besides, offline mode is really only an issue with dial up users these days.
And to whoever said there are tons of people without the internet.. what are the chances of them

A) knowing about HL2
and
B) having systems up-to-date enough to play HL2?

yea seems alittle odd ppl would have a pc to play HL2 but not an internet.

i'd say percentage of people without the internet, and know about hl2/have a system good enough to play hl2, is about maybe 5 - 10%...the only way they could even know about hl2 is either by reading a gaming magazine or a friend has told them about it.

I have a few mates who are dying to get their hands on Half Life 2 (mostly from me showing them the videos) but who don't have internet connections.

Remember guys, things are different outside of America, not everyone has the same access to technology as you guys. Also, alot of people just don't have much use for the internet, but they should be entitled to play games aswell. That is why I strongly oppose developers who release sub-standard games with the intention of patching them.

Edit: But, in saying that, did you know that New Zealand has the highest ratio of internet connections per capita in the world? There's a useless fact for ya!

didn't gabe or someone say that for the first couple weeks people will need to be online. forgot what exactly was to happen, but something like that.

what will happen is that when you install for single player and multiplayer it will authenticate through steam... then it will produce the 9999999999 ram bug because valve will forget to remove it before everyone was given the green light to play.

thus crashing hundreds and thousands of computers world wide.... most will love everything on their hard drives...

forcing valve to give the peoples money back and give the people who bought it through steam for free...

yay.

the hype is dying.
