(as alot of work has been done on facial expression, and personality development of key characters I thought this thread would make for intresting discussion)

I dont believe a discussion on the depth of the character personalities and interaction with that has been posted before and it would be intresting to hear everyones expectations. Like personalities changing as the game develops maybe, it looks truely flexible, Alex and Dr Kleiner... , Alex looks like shes after some revenge ,Kleiner a defenceless scientist.??, but I cant envision Alex with a machine gun in her hands either for some reason.,... what about you guys .. how are you expecting their personalities to influence the way you play certain parts? and the way they play certain parts, .. like Barney having a bad experiance then he turns into a coward. :rolling:lol

Actually, I reckon Barney is more the "Well, there's no hope for me now... SO I MIGHT AS WELL GO OUT KICKING BUTT!" type...

yeh thats what I reckon, but I wonder weither anything is gonna happen to your pals,, and how that will effect your decisions and missions, perhaps adding to the complexity weither it be scripted or not

I'm wondering what Father Gregory's going to be like. At least, I think that that's his name...

funny I havnt heard much about him... whats going on with that name... I guess he's a priest :)

Gman will turn up with a minigun, with shifty eyes, and replies

"Something out there, but ain't no man"

And a really cool one, by the sound of it... apparently he's the one who set up all the traps in Traptown...

FINNALLY a character in a game that has my name, woo! Anyway yeah, he set up those traps, but as to what role he plays is a mystery, although you see him for a second in the beta.

as for character expressions, im betting it will be a large part of the game. in the last game i had no problem killing a scientist or barney, but this time i have a feeling i wont be able to shoot at teammates, for fear of hurting their feelings. they just look so real... plus with the, oh what is it called, where they paint on blood to peoples bodys... anyway thatll make things even better and make you feel worse or better depending on what you shoot.

its a real shame that valve dosent want to have cut scenes. as much as they wouldnt fit into the game, i can defenetly see some great uses of facial animations in cutscenes. image if alex were to get trapped and be in danger, and the camera zooms in on her scared face, it would just be amazing.

i think there just NPC's that will have coded reactions and as such i dont feel ill be developing any rapore with them.

kool, didnt know that. that makes for intrestingness :E

they use the first person perspective to simulate a cutscene,, but its done like that to keep you in Gordon's shoes.

that'd definately be interesting. It seems highly likely, most people will make art by using something tangible, so theres probably some living models out there they based them on. Alot of people could look like Freeman tho cause the beard kinda covers up a major part of his face. I've seen people that look like him walk by on the street

That must have been scary. Was there head crabs chasing the people that looked like gordo?

there's a post about this in the valve info thread... i'm not exactly sure where, but the answer is no. For characters you see, like Alyx and Dr. Kleiner, they used some real faces for rough modeling, but all the detail work and personalization was done through the skill of the artists, not by modeling or scanning some specific person.

I think they actually had the faces looking too realistic, but they had to tone it down a notch, if I remember correctly.

I think that developers learned that using real faces doesnt work from max payne. Heh good ol' constipated max payne

here it is:
Gabe: We usually start from real world source material, whether it's a texture, a model, or a face. Sometimes faces are composites of more than one person. We actually backed off the realism of the faces a bit, since it was forcing us to spend more polys on clothes to make them comparably realistic than we could afford.
not quite what i remembered, but close enough.
