i have had halflife 2 for over a year now and i still haven't finished the game, ive played it off and on but at one point i had to reformat but i didn't want to start over so i copied the save folder and pasted it when i reinstalled it the next time. now when ever i click on a saved game in HL2 it doesn't load sometimes. it freezes at different spots during loading and sometimes if i get lucky it will eventually load and ill be able to play. but this is starting to get annoying because if it freezes i can't ctr alt del to close it because when i do that the game doesn't minimize or the task manager doesn't pop up. so i have to restart and try again. i have made sure all my anti virus and what not is closed so taht won't it won't be a problem. Please help me i have tried everything. ive even reinstalled the game 2-3 times.

edit: ok now it seem the loading screen is working just fine but while im playing i get random freezes or lag. if it freezes the sound will start looping so i disable hardware acceleration for my sound and then i started running hl2 again and i get random lagspikes during play. i haven't gone 5 minutes without there being some problem. and just now when i started up the game again you first start the game and it says loading down at the bottom right once it loaded the graphics and sound of the smoke coming out of the smoke stacks was really choppy. idk whats going on!

PROBLEM : Half life 2 sometimes gets stuck at loading screen, and more recently has started freezing in game with looping sound or lags to the point i think its frozen without looping sound

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION : i had to reformat so i copied the Save folder in the HL2 folder and copied it over once i reformatted and reinstalled the game, also when i first installed the game i had a different graphics card, GeForce 5900XT and it worked fine, then i reformated and copied over the saved files and then later got the new graphics card although i can not remember whether or not the game worked before i got this new graphics card.

also, i ran the thing you had in your post and it got to 100% and closed so idk if thats good or bad.

ok new update: i can now load it seems my saved games just fine but when i get to a part in the game (i don't know if its this way for all checkpoints) it freezes. it pops the little loading box up on the screen and then never loads. i left it alone for 30 min came back and it was still loading. happened twice. so idk what the hell is going on but i want to finish this game because i have a feeling i only have about 20-30 minutes of gameplay left.

And you have the latest Catalyst drivers for your Radeon X800? (Link)

Also, here is a link to Steam Support: Link

the catalyst drivers were very recently updated so im downloading those right now and hopefully that will fix my problem, also the steam support link you posted i have already looked at and have tried all of the things it said to do except calling my motherboard company.

ok so i updated my graphics card drivers and it fixed the problem, as i figured i only had about 45-1 hr left of gameplay and i beat the game. it went off without a hitch except for the occasional lag when many different things were going on and a game error that caused the game to shut down, but i got past the point where it occured and beat it. Thanks so much for your help. i was so focused that it was a sound problem because of the steam support site that i didnt even think to check my video card drivers. Thanks so much and keep doin what you do.

p.s i thought the ending was a little dull/bad, does lost coast pick up where HL2 left off and then episode 1 picks up from there or how does that work? also do you recommend them because id like to continue the plot line. :-)

Lost Coast was actually a level that was cut from Half-Life 2. It was supposed to be somewhere during the chapter "Highway 17". It has been converted into a playable tech demo for Source's HDR updates (which are now visible in Episode 1, so you won't see anything new). It's about 15 minutes in length and it's fun to play. It's also free :p

Anyways, the endings for Half-Life games are always cliffhangers, and if you haven't seen the secret trailer, start a new game and select the chapter 'Coming Soon' to watch it.
