HL2 Multiplayer Hosting problem

Hi! i was hoping for some help in here, so here it goes;

me and my friend was going to play some HL2 multiplayer mods last night, but we got problems to join the server i made or even he made. we got this message; Server Not Responding.

this message pops up when im trying to connect to hes server, and the other way also. anyone else got the same problem as we?

and btw; i got Windows Vista and my friend got Windows XP

type status in console to get the ip then have him type

if that doesn't work a great program to get would be PLaylinc d/l the client at www.playlinc.com You can customism a server and load it from online servers on the west coast, Dallas, or New York.

Connection failed after 4 retries.

And the wierd thing is, that our games wont show up on each others friends server in the server menu either..

If it's like none of us are playing the game at all..

Im not good at these things, but I understand that you are required to port forward or something.
I hope one of the more l33t people can continue what I am saying.

Load up a server, it will be 100 times faster and you will have control over it
