Hl2.net Episode 1 Review

Good to see a review that is surprisingly well balanced (for a Half-Life fan site review). Nice work.

Hl2.net runs on Valve time, eh? :P

The review is pretty much spot-on.

Yes, Samon, it's all good. Can I go now?

I figured I'd force you to read and comment since I'm having to sit and plough through your Design Document. :p

Yes, I agree that the escorting mission was a bit dump. You only have to escort them so short distance that it makes them appear really helpless. I think in the commentary they said how the distance was at first even shorter. And when you look at the map it looks a bit like the point where you have to lead them is only wall behind the point where you pick them up.

Yep, exactly the score I would give it.

Well better late than never :)
Good review - mirrors my own views very closely.

...

You walked into it. :cheese:

(Oh, baby, you know I didn't mean it that way. ;()

You should include some screenies though. It'd break up the monolithic text.

Very well written. Pretty much mimics my views on the game too.

how about adding a "good" and "bad" list just like the ones in gamespot's reviews

Nice review, and yea, agree with the escort bit. It stood out as a let down, even though I wasn't being critical at all while playing for the first time.

Even keeping the whole escort thing, that part could have been fine if the gameplay was more interesting. For example actually having to use the hoppers in a tactical way, maybe a reprogrammed sentry or two, that sort of thing.

I did enjoy the Strider battle though.

The escort part was OK for me, especially as far as video game escort missions go, but it was repetitive and really broke up the game's otherwise brilliant pacing.

Good review, although I'll have to disagree on the City 17 sections being "more of the same". I felt that Valve really managed to keep it interesting for at least a little bit more, and got the atmosphere of an evacuating doomed city across very well.

Good review, although I'll have to disagree on the City 17 sections being "more of the same".

I was thinking more in the context of stuff like the Antlion Guard battle and what have you. I think the opening area of the C17 chapter was very, very good.
