HL2 Won't Launch, help!

I've spent two hours trying to figure this out with no luck. My Steam download is 100% complete and unlocked. However, when I click to launch the game all I get is the "Preparing the Play" window for a few seconds, then nothing. Other Steam games like Opposing Force and HL work w/out a problem.

Any ideas?

I'm kind of ticked that they took down their forums - it'd be nice to see some Valve techs directly dealing with these issues rather than having to come to other forums. Also, how do you submit a question to their support? I see no option to send them a question about what I'm experiencing.

reboot, try again. wait a long time, because it takes a while to get going. if it doesnt work, good luck

I have exactly the same problem. I tried rebooting to no avail. Trided latering the 3D card settings (different res, minimal settings).
If there's debug file or error message file some1 knows about please say because I haven't a clue to the cause

There's too many people trying to unlock it, I guess. You'll just have to be patient.

Why not post another 50 threads or so in the meantime to fill up the forum with more inane ramblings?!

well i know you probably know better, but just incase....it took my machine (1.9ghz 1gig ram) a good 5 minutes to go from desktop to game the first time i ran it

Firstly the game IS unlocked

Secondly when at the main menu->new->start new game

the loading screen apears briefly then kicks me back out to the main hl2 screen.


NO errors, NO warnins, and most importantly NO hl2

I have a faster processor, but I've waited at least that long. I see very little hard drive access during that wait. However, did the "Preparing to . . ." screen stay up for you the entire time, or did it disappear for a while. That screen disappears pretty quickly each time I try it.
