how do i host my own game. Do i have to have some special software or dedicated server. Or can i just host a game over my own internet connection?

Just go to creat game, but you might want to go into your router settings

192.168.1.1 for most and open up port 27015 and enable it. and then you should be set. Not many people are gonna want to connect to your server if its running off the computer you play on. If you want to invet and buy a server, which will cost you alot of money... Theres links all over halflife2.net

Servers are a lot cheaper than PCs, since you don't need all the fancy stuff that comes with a Personal Computer.

Hi guys, just a quick question, i want to start my own server, and not use my gaming pc, so if i built a basic pc (just the base unit) about 2.5ghtz, 1gb ram and networked it to my broadband router, installed nothing but basic windows and hL2, steam and dedicated server, would that work? or do i have to buy an actual server? (i know, i know i am stupid, lol)

Yes, it would work, but it would suck up a lot of bandwidth if the server became popular and your ISP might get pissed off.

Any computer can act as a server. Oh and btw you need a static IP address if you want a server.
