In the hammer editor how can I put different textures on different sides of a block?

I think the tool is called the face editor. Whatever the name is it's the tool on the sidebar that looks like a cube with three different color faces. Choose it, then select a brush face, choose your texture, and click apply. I think that's right.

I see the cube but when I click on it it isn't called face editor and there is no option to select a brush.
