right...my mate has a server-he has something called an FTP which apparently you use to put maps on the server... (he's kinda new to that)

i have a map. we want to play it (duh!) ...but hammer saved it in these file types:
.VMF
.VMX
.PRT
.BSP
.TXT

and...i dont, but do i need to have a .NAV file for the map to run? this is what other maps have in my maps folder.
can someone tell me if this FTP thing uploads any of those type of files above? and if not, what file type does it need? ...or how do i put maps on a server if you dont use an FTP thing?
thx in advance-and soz for sounding nooby

So you don't need to know how to upload maps. You need Basic Web Protocols and Web Server Administration 101.

FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol, commonly used to--you guessed it--transfer files. It doesn't matter what the file contains or what it's named.

Be sure to run your map and run both buildcubemaps and nav_generate from the in-game console. This will give you a final BSP and a NAV file, which can both be uploaded to the server's maps folder.

thanks alot-seemed to work just as you said...great help, thx!

Mind you that you might want to edit that nav file yourself.

This file controls Hostage movement and Bot movement. If nav_generate gives you bad file then you will have to edit it manually.

Also, there is the place painting included in the nav file wich is used to specify different areas in your map which will be displayed under the radar and in chat messages etc etc.
