I don't get it. I can kill a beggar in the middle of the street, and as long as I do it hidden in sneak mode, I won't get a bounty. But when I killed some dark elf, suddenly the guard knew where I was, even though I was hidden in sneak mode and killed the elf in one shot.

Now I've got a problem. I'm doing quests for the DB and in one of them *little spoiler* I have to kill a female guard. She's either in the city barracks, patrolling the streets or in her room in an Inn. I figured I can kill her in her room without alerting anyone, but after doing so I suddenly had a bounty of 1040 on me and the guards chasing me to announce that to me. Now I don't feel like paying 1040 gold (or half the price in the Thieves Guild). Is there any way to kill someone in the town without alerting the guards (her in this case)?

I was never caught by a guard in any DB quest. You're just being too brash about things.

In fact, after the first few days, I have NEVER had any problems with guards. I don't see where people get all these complaints from.

Brash? Tell me what am I doing wrong.

If you have done all the DB quests then you will probably remember the one with the Draconis family. It's killing the female guard giving me a large bounty. She sleeps only in the barracks where there are other guards. Indoors she is alone in the Inn. I go into her room, into sneak mode and get the first arrow in her. Then I have to shoot her a few times more, because she's quite tough, so she gets to yell a few things at me. I don't let her get close enough to tell me I've violated the law.

What am I doing wrong then?

***slight DB spoiler***

I had trouble with that female guard too. She was alone in her room and died in two quick hits - yet a guard at the other side of the city found out :?. I'd followed her about during the day and there didn't seem to be any safe time or place to kill her. I'd run out of poisoned apples too. In the end I paid the fine.

How did other ppl kill her (it's the DB quest that involves killing an entire family)

I don't remember entirely, but I found a time when she was standing in a corner with no one else in the room, so I just snuck up behind her with a knife and power stabbed for 6x damage. It did help that I am born under The Shadow.

I've got poisoned apples I can try, but she probably won't eat anything.

I murdered her and then took off the gray cowl..

I reckon the majority of people do that quest without having got that. I certainly hadn't.

I haven't got it either. My vampire dude isn't going to lower his standards to that of a common gutter thief!

I was annoyed when i killed the grand champion in the arena... the guards knew, 'some place up high saw my deed' or something... rah.

That means the Dark Brotherhood saw you.

I tried the apple on the guard, but it seems she doesn't eat, heh.

I guess it just depends on many factors whether you get a bounty or not.

I was screwing around one day and decided to kill some people. I just insulted him using the radiant AI tool. I made him hate me as much as possible, then I drew my sword and destroyed him. I didn't get a bounty.

Then, I attacked a leader of the guard and took his keys, and I think it ruined a quest or something, he must have been an evil guard quest where I was supposed to kill him. I got a quest message saying I should report this to the 2nd in command. After I killed him I went ahead and bribed a beggar to tell me about the grey fox, then I killed her and took my money back. Still no bounty.

Eventually I went to the Count. I tried to get the quest to update by talking to the 2nd in command but apparently I had done it out of order and confused the game.

I tried to kill the Count - the ruler of this town (called Chaydenal) and tried to kill him, but he kept going unconscious. I was immediately attacked by his body guard and the 2nd in command of the guard and I killed both of them. By now I had like a bounty of 80 gold (laff) So I went and killed some more guards. Since I had attacked someone (the leader of the town) and not killed him, the bounty was only 80 gold! Killing his body guard and the new guard captain were in self-defense?!

I continued killing some more guards and breaking into everyone's room and reading all thier books - including the count's bedroom. Eventually, I walked into a room with 8 guards in it and was forced to retreat all the way to a dungeon a mile away - which one guard followed me inside of...

I eventually just reloaded the game to the part where I still didn't have a bounty.

Yea I just got done going on another phsyco-path rampage. The sword fighting with the guards and other NPC's is so much fun.

Right before I knocked his ass sideways 6 feet and ended the guards life in a powerful swing, he said something funny like, "I've fought mud crabs tougher than you!"

ghahaha

Ill get a bunch of NPC's and start a huge battle between us vs guards :). Hell onetime 2 guys saved me. I was almost dead and two guards were chasing me. Then all of the sudden two guys see and come up and just start beating the shit out of the guards.

There are no more guards in that town.

Hey thats really good, but I might wait, it sounds like its got a bug in it from reading the comments below.

Several people complaining that they can't go to the temple and have their stats repaired, even though they have no bounty. I mean - I guess the temple can see everything - can see your crimes, even if you didn't get caught - it makes sense, but there is no way to repent without being able to pay for your crime, so you can never be forgiven.

You know when she screamed? Exactly. If you kill her in one hit, noone will ever know. Besides her, you and the DB.

I was running that mod for a while, and I think the 'harder' version (where the NPCs' disposition drops) nearly screwed up the entire game for me by causing the guards to turn on me in Kvatch. I had never murdered anyone, but by using console commands I found out that before the guards attacked me all their disposition was at 0, and the temple in Kvatch did the same 'repent for your crimes thing' even though I had no bounty.

Actually, it seems it's because she is a guard and uses her telepathic powers to tell the other guards that she's been attacked. A few quests later I killed some Khajit in his house after like 30 seconds of shooting and screaming and I got no bounty.

You killed a khajit? You bastard!

Seriously though, I think if you kill 'em in one hit they'll be all 'hahahaha... hahah... haha... ug' and there will be no bounty.

That's because he "Paid off" the guard to not do anything about any commotion in his house. Your dead drop tells you that.

Ah yes, he payed of the guards in case the fight "spilled" on the city streets. I thought it meant that the guard would not attack only him...
