How do you figure the amount of stairs?

I was just thinking about making a little stairwell, but i'm curious how i can figure a uniform way to make stairs, so that I can move to the end up the flight in precise increments with the same amount of steps and no second guessing/meticulous trial and error.

Third-grade arithmetic. Height of stairwell divided by some arbitrary stair height gives you the number of steps, or divided by some arbitrary number of steps gives you stair height. Length of stairwell divided by the number of steps gives you the width of each step.

if you search for "measure" in the Hammer texture list thingy valve supplied a template for stairs there. There are also many other helpful textures in that list too.
