How long has it been in development?

Does anyone know how long Half life 2 has been in development, m expecting big things, since i believe it is more than four years, as an interview with Newell said that some of the textures for the game were made 4 years ago, which leads me to think it was being made much before that even!

They started working on it like 5 months after Half Life was released, so around 6 years.
