how to stop steam updating on dialup 28k

is it possible to stop steam from updating
the game. it seems every time i play the single player
game steam must update somthing and it takes hours or days
to update(dialup 28K). then i see it update deathmatch which i am not using on this computer.

another thing if this is some anti piracy thing its going to make me get a pirated version. i have always purchased my software but i still feel somthing strange going on here. why not allow me to download updates from a diffrent machine(highspeed) then apply later. not every one on the planet can get highspeed

i hope there is a simple solution

keep steam on 'offline' mode when you connect, if it doesnt connect to the net, then it cant find updates, simple as.

i try that and it says file missing or broken requires connection to steam.

right click the game in steam, go to properties, and turn auto updates off.

That is not sufficient. The moment you load Steam, if you are connected to the net, it will update and/or verify your username and password, regardless of whether it is set to online/offline mode.

This guy's best bet is to play Half Life 2 in OFFLINE MODE only when he is OFFLINE.
