I need help with the dune buggy level of HL2

Am I supposed to turn those thumpers off? And is there a map? I can't figure out where the heck I'm going! I am sooo lost!

It's a completely linear game, how the hell can you get lost?

Keep the thumpers on! It keeps the antlions away so you can explore the surroundings on foot. Also just look out for a lighter 'road' to follow, and keep away from the water

I'm one of those people that gets lost and disoriented really easily. I guess I'll just keep at it... Everything looks the same so I keep going in circles.
