Anyone know what this file is?

It's in skins>grey>steam>games

I also got half-life engine.gcf loaded 6/5 at 8.3mb!!

Probably nothing too interesting, I just was curious.

It's the icon for the Half-Life 2 media that was released during the Steam beta. It was the BINK videos.

icon_hl2_media.tga is from when the orginal E3 2003 BINK videos were hosted on Steam. This was during the Steam beta.

half-life engine.gcf I assume is parts of the Half-Life engine code that need to be utilised by third party mods.

Is what downloading automatically?

I meant that is the file he is talking about being downloaded by steam??

Well yes, it was downloaded by Steam yesterday apparently.

It was there anyway...keep up mate. it was there when we had the E3 2003 videos from the Steam Beta last year.

I just started using steam not to long ago so I'm still kinda new at this sort of thing.

I do have a question though. Is Half-life 2 going to be automatically pre-loaded on to steam?? I don't want that. I want to get it from a store. Will we beable to choose if Half-life 2 is pre-loaded on to our computer??

I seem to remember it not being there after the Steam Beta ended but I could just be wrong.

I'm fairly sure we will be able to decide if we want to preload HL2. Lots of people won't want to download 2gb+ worth of files that they won't use.

After the complaints people made about Steam pre-loading Condition Zero without asking, they implemented something where it asks you first.

You will have the choice to do it either way.

Although if you let it preload, once you've got the box home you'll just need to enter the CD Key and it'll let you play. You won't have to install or anything.

Hey man that's awesome. thanks.

If the icon has just been added, I think it's safe to assume that (Like C:G) the next update will be the start of the 2004 binks released.

meh, this thread was started by the same person that said that HL2 was preloading on his machine the other day.

Pinch of salt, anyone?

The icon is there, both in the skin folder and platform.gcf.

You could cancel the condition zero preloading from the very start, unless you were a total idiot

Hm, that kind of ruins the fun of getting home and reading the instruction manual while it's installing. I think I'll install HL2 off the CDs, just for fun :)

Nah, you can read it online while the cache decrypts. :P

It's going to be really annoying having Half-Life 2 on my computer for a week and not being able to play it.

Waiting for Codename: Gordon was bad enough.

Mind you, I probably won't have a decent internet connexion.

At least there's a reason with HL2: the release has to be in synch with brick & mortar retailers.

I definetely will get the preloaded version.

Well
A) I have to cause I used the ATI thing cause I didn't want to wait 6-8 weeks for a stupid box
B) I wouldn't care about the stupid box that much anyways...
C) Since I'm preloading I will play it 12:01AM the morning it's released while you guys are waiting for your primitive stores to open!! hehehe

Yea so many people are gonna try to hack the .gcf HL2 file before the release...

And it makes sense if it's been recently preloaded as Gabe said that they would release the bink videos shortly so it's kind of expected...

*edit*
Pinch of salt, anyone?

Give me the whole damn salt shaker :afro:

Aye, it's still not going to make me feel any better about it.

My apologies - had you confused with someone else

:)

funny...i never pre-loaded condition zero.... infact, i never had the option to do so.. just to order it

Then you had the option of pre-loading it. If you order it pre-loads, if you don't it doesn't.

Also it depends on whether you first launched Steam once it was available for pre-order, or once it was actually released.

Nope, neither did I. The bug didn't affect everyone.

that i couldnt tell, but if i clicked to say "pre-load" he would make me pay for it... so of course i didnt do squat

EDIT- but you mean that cz qwould star pre-loading without us saying it to do so?? man that's retard!! such an idea doesnt fit in my mind

So, there is a chance the next steam update will have the new BINK vids? :p

I think my posts have been misunderstood a little. Originally when CZ was available for pre-orders the game automatically downloaded whether you liked it or not which could be cancelled (but people still objected because people are stupid).

Then they released a Steam update shortly afterwards so that you only pre-loaded CZ if you actually pre-ordered it.

The HL2 Media icon has always been there. Doesn't mean that the HL2 media is returning to Steam any time soon.

Are you really sure? I do remember people saying that there wasn't even an icon (When we were all surprised there was no media after the beta).

Well I just went to Steam\skins\grey\steam\games, took a glance at the icon_hl2_media.tga file's properties and it says "Created: 22 September 2003".

So no it's not new and no it doesn't mean there will be bink videos arriving shortly.

I don't really understand why people who didn't like this are considered stupid. I mean yes, it could be canceled, but that does't change the fact that when I came home at the end of the day I had 300 megs of a game I didn't want on my harddrive. And since I had just left my computer on and steam on all day I didn't even know that it had downloaded it, until I was looking around in steam and found an extra 1/3 of a gig cluttering up my HD. (Not everyone has huge harddrives you know)

Now I realize this wasn't some huge deal, but I just don't see why it's not a legitimate complaint. A lot of people didn't like it and it was incredibly easy for Valve to fix by just asking first if people wanted to preload it. Now I understand that a lot of people didn't care too, and that's fine. Just no reason to belittle the people who didn't like it, in my opinion.

Anyway, it's all been rehashed over and over, so meh. Back to the topic at hand....what was the topic again?

Gabe said they will be releasing the BINKs shortly as they did with the other E3... No date yet though so we don't know exactly when.
