Hi

Forgive me if I am posting this at the wrong place..

How does one open a downloaded map in half-life 2 ( not episode 1 or anything) . I am supposed to open a console or something and then type 'map ' ???
well that console thing doesn't open..

Any help ?

OR better still is there a better way of 'installing' a map without typing anything?

Thanks
bye

It's fairly simple. I hope the map you downloaded came with instructions on where to place the file, I can't remember exactly where it goes, perhaps in "username/Half-life 2/hl2 or perhaps hl2/maps, it's been a while since I did it.

To open the map, enable the console first, go to options, keyboard, advanced. And tick the enable developers console box. Press the tilda key ', under ESC, to the left of 1. To open the console. Some keyboards don't have this key. If this is your problem, follow the next step, if not, ignore it.

Right click HL2 in your 'my games' list, go to properties, set launch options. Add this "-console" without the speechmarks. This will open the console when the game launches. Type in the console bind "F4" "toggleconsole", and use F4 to open close it. You can bind any button you wish.

Lastly, to open the actual map, type in "map mapname", which is the exact name of the file which you pasted into the HL2 folder earlier. When you type in 'map' it should show you a list of maps which you have installed, including default HL2 ones.

Thanks for the detailed answer!
console does open, but when I type map mapname the game crashes. it doesn't show the list of maps installed either. But thats probably because it crashes before it gets chance to show any list lol

"mapname" is the name of the map that you installed. ex. d1_town

the tilde key should be all that you'll need to open the console ( granted you have it enabled in the options, under keyboard tab>advanced make sure enable developers console is enabled ) tilde key looks like "~" the one under the Esc key.

in your steam directory there should be in there some where a maps folder location should look pretty similar to this:

C:/Program Folder/Steam/Steamapps/YOURUSERSNAME/Half life 2/hl2/maps

put the map file in there ( map file should be a .bsp made for Half life/source engine ) other maps for example Day of Defeat source or Counter Strike source should work.. however you will most likely run into problems with them.

after you've placed the map file in the map folder run the game and from the start menu ( after you've enabled the dev console ) open the console and type *maps ( or the star after maps* i dont remember )

you can also type in "map mapname.bsp" or changelevel mapname.bsp or changemap mapname.bsp

Yes so if your map file name was called Dungeons, you type "map Dungeons" and it should load.

correct.. you should not need the .bsp extention.. i just added to show i was talking about the map file name its self.

I believe its maps * to show a list of maps installed.
