I have HL2 installed on my downstairs PC which is a bit rubbish and tends to get very jerky. my upstairs pc that i generally use for games has not got the internet available for it. Can i still install hl2 on my upstairs pc without the internet and just not receive updates?

Why dont you just take your PC downstairs to activate HL2 and then take it back up?

To answer your question, no it's impossible to install HL2 without the internet.

However, do as Veggi recommends. Take your computer downstairs, get it activated on the internet and then take it back upstairs.

Half-Life 2 will then run in Offline Mode where you won't get any updates until it connects to the internet again.

That is probably the best way to do it. Just update it once and you shouldn't really need to update it any more unless some critical update comes along. However, beware - my friend said he can't get offline mode working any more after updating HL2 to 100%. Make sure offline mode is working before you bring your PC back upstairs. Offline mode works fine for me, btw, I'm just saying make sure it works for you too.

Another way to do it is burn your install of HL2 from your downstairs comp onto DVD (or copy it to a usb HD or whatever). You can copy just the GCF files, but if you copy the entire Steam folder and then put it back in the exact same file path on your upstairs comp then it will also work, and the Steam platform will be fully updated too (although what with offline mode possibly broken, I'm not sure if that's a good thing...).
