It's nearly that time of year again! About a month and a half to go...
For anyone who isn't familiar with the TT, it's the oldest motorcycle race in the world and it takes place around a 36 mile circuit of real roads that have been closed off for the racing.
It's sheer lunacy, but it's always amazing to watch. It's quite unbelievable to see these guys nailing it at 200mph down narrow tree-lined roads and taking corners through villages at 120mph with stone walls, telegraph poles and houses a mere arms length away.
It kind of puts the whole circut racing scene into perspective - you can push as hard as you like and if you crash it usually doesn't matter a great deal, but if you screw up on the island you're dead.
I was supposed to be going along this year, but it will have to wait til 2009 now. They also do "Mad Sunday" where they make the mountain section of the course a one way road so tourists can ride it as fast as they like. Fun.
I just saw this video of an onboard lap from one of the top riders, who sadly died on the course a few years ago. Comparisons with Roman bloodsport spring to mind.
