Right, I've seen this on 3 different forums now, apologies if its a repost but here goes.

I want to see how many people correctly answer the following question before the thread descends into a flame pit of "YOU DESERVE TO DIE" and "YOUR A NOOB SHUT UP STFU" :D

A plane is standing on a runway that can move (some sort of band conveyer). The plane moves in one direction, while the conveyer moves in the opposite direction. This conveyer has a control system that tracks the plane speed and tunes the speed of the conveyer to be exactly the same (but in opposite direction).

The question is:

Will the plane take off or not?

Depends if you believe in Intelligent Lifting. Since Science, and Forumites can't explain why planes fly, then an Intelligent Lifter must be lifting them.

So yes.

I vote no, although my lack of physics knowledge and even less plane knowledge probably makes me wrong.

Am I the only one clueless as to what "*light blue touch paper*" means?

I voted no anyway. I thought the plane had to be moving forward in order to create the flow of wind under the wings which in turn made it life off. :S
 
No. Because technically it's not moving anywhere, but staying stationary.
 
Yes. It would slowly collect more and more wind (Faster speeds) and then gain some airtime. It may crash though.
 
All the plane does when taking off is gaining speed to take flight. Why, I can't exactly explain with sense, inless I had a diagram.
Even though it has a force equal to its heading the opposite way, that just stops it from moving out of its place, and perhaps slows down the wheels a bit increasing takeoff time.

If it's sitting still, how does air flow over the wings to create the low pressure effect?


Maybe if it had props infront of the wings or something.

Origional post implies that the conveyor belt is stopping foward movement. If not then ok, sure.

Alright...lets break this up. Ignore the wheels/touching the ground for now. When a plane(propellor to make things easier) is taking off the propellor spins and grabs the air which pulls it forward and air passing under the wings gives it lift. The only thing the moving runway would do is make the wheels spin, it wont affect the plane.

The ground has nothing to do with planes taking off...it is all about the air which is how they work.

Oh wait! It's not the wheels that cause propulsion on a plane, its the propellor itself. So the plane would still be pulled forward even though it's wheels are/are not moving.

So YES!!!

Some kind of jet or something can actually take off without moving powered by rocket. Also, say it was windy enough fpr the plane to take off without moving? What if there is no gravity pulling against a plane? So I'd say it depends.

If it increases speed it will take off eventually (note it has nothing to do with air being blown over the wing by a propeller)

The key is:
The plane moves in one direction, while the conveyer moves in the opposite direction.

The engine will still pull(or)push the plane, the wheels will be spinning insanely fast, and the plane will go faster and eventually take off.
The wheels aren't providing propulsion.

I voted yes becuase I am assuming its a a harrior jet(sp?) that can vertically take off =p

but seriously i would still vote yes because if the plane jet engine reaches to the speed of which it becomes airborne i dont believe that the wheels moving in the opposite will stop the flight. It's the engine - not the rotation of the wheels. Anyone have the official answer?

If you read the thread, you would have realized that the answer is yes, not because it's a harrier, not because the propellers are blowing air around, but because in the question it clearly states THE PLANE IS MOVING IN A DIRECTION (forwards, i hope). So that means the plane is not just sitting on the ground, it's moving. Plane moving forwards = air moving over wings = lift.

The implication is that the plane is stationary because of the conveyor belt. No?

The question is ambiguous.
 
I was sure the answer was no at first, it seemed really obvious. But I see why it's yes now. How quaint.
