Lipsyncing

I'm not sure how it's done, like whether you have to manually control every movement of the lips or whether it syncs to the audio. I'm planning on making a machinima for a Drama project and I'd like to see if it's possible in Source. A comphrehensive guide of Machinima in Source would be very helpful.
