I bought this 5.1 surround sound system today (logitech z-640) and I set it up and it worked fine. However, the two rear speakers dont seem to play any sound. They are on, and I tested them in multi channel sound manager, where they worked. But when I play games, they dont, only the front 3 do.

Help!!! I dont know what to do!

Since you already tested them in the multi channel sound manager i'm not sure. When you play music from whatever media player you use does it utilize all the speakers?

If it does then I suspect the problem may be that the game hasn't been configured to use all the speakers. You may need to go into the sound options and start experimenting.

many games are set to 2 channel by default, you will have to go into each game you play and tell it you now have new stuff. poke around in you game sound settings and see what is there.. if the sound HW was not there when you installed the game it probably cant see it.

and hey tell me how everything goes, i was thinking about buying a 640 my self. i need to be able to here behind me now it would seem according to many game reviews

Well, the system itself is great, the subwoofer is amazing. But still no luck geting them to work. They dont even work in windows media player lol.

/me trys to think of a solution

go into device manager and see if the drivers are all installed and the OS sees the HW correctly, also check the windows tab for speaker setup.. not sure if you might have to change it too.

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > (Speaker Settings) Advanced > (Speaker Setup) 5.1 surround speakers

See if that's set properly. What OS are you running? Soundcard? I remember I couldn't get my two rear speakers to work properly in Win98

I tried all that. Im running windows xp home edition on an Avance AC97 sound card.

I had a similar problem when connecting creative labs speakers to my soundstorm mobo (speakers were analogue-only and a bitch to configure) so I treated myself to some Z680s and used the digital co-ax connection and haven't had a problem since.

To sum it up:

Analogue baaaaaad.
Digital goooooooood.

Thats not entirely true. Actually its not true at all. Digital has to be converted to analogue anyway (speakers are only analog - for obvious reasons) with a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter). There are alot of different qualities of DACs. I personnaly prefer the sound quality from the DAC on my Sound Blaster Audigy 2 than from the one on my Logitech Z-680 (when its hooked up in digital mode).

If ever you want to hear some DVD Audio (top top quality available after vinyls) then you have no choice but to hook up your speakers in analog mode.

obviously the signal is converted to analogue by the amp but the connection between the amp and the soundcard is better in digital since the computer is outputting that as binary encoded in DD5.1, the amp can take this data via a single channel and convert all 6 channels into 6 perfect analogue signals for the speakers, all from one co-ax cable.

Cases where analogue amps benefit over digital is where the source of the sound is also analogue, eg. guitar amps etc.

Hey man, i have the same sound card and i hope to get the Z640, do u think tht u cud tell me if there are any probs and what was up with urs? Cheers. Dave.

i had this problem, if you are running a Abit NF7 mobo, they coloured the back sockets wrong, swop the orange with the black and you'll be fine. It fixed my problem anyway, i made a thread on it back in the day.
