How does Magic spells leveling work? say in illusion I have a stat of 45 yet I cant use magic spells that say I need a level 25 in illusion ...but my stat says 45? what am I missing here?

also I just dont understand leveling ...how do you get +5 stat bonuses? I've only ever had a +4 bonus and I have no idea how. What do the different colours on the stat numbers mean? red, green, blue?

Maybe it's talking about your overall level. I myself am not a magic user.

I think the stats bonsues come from your spells you have cast on yourself and also the nifty equipment you can get, which is enchanted.

It may be because you don't have enough magica, I've found this to be a problem. Instead of blitzing my intelligence level I've tried to balance a lot of the others out.

As to the other question I've no idea.

EDIT: Sorry, the colours on the stats represent their status: blue is at normal, green is stat boosted and red is below normal. (poisoned etc.)

To get a +5 stat bonus you need to level up 10 skills within one attribute (ex. strength) before you level up. Note that once you level up but before you sleep, increasing skill level will not affect your attribute modifiers. All skill increases after leveling up but before sleeping will affect attributes for the next level. Confusing? :D

some say I dont have enough magika while others say: requirements: level 25 in illusion ...well my illusion is 45 ...it cant be tied to level? I mean I have to wait 11 levels to use soul trap? if so that sucks, most of my spells are chintzy

Roland Deschain: yes very, do you have the non-confusing version? :)

That was what I thought at first, but I've not encountered any spells telling me this yet. It would be pretty crappy if you have to achieve a certain level to use spells.

I found this in Wikipedia, it pretty much says the same this I say, but probably a little more clearly :D: http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Leveling.

As to you not being able to use 25 Illusion magic if your illusin skill is 45, that is a bug in the game then. Go back into the menu and double check that you have indeed a level of 45, otherwise start looking for patches

perhaps your actual level is lower than 25, but you have items that raise it?

is the number green?

Would it be possible to raise a stat over 20 points with items such as clothing and armour, even potions?

yes but 20 points seems a lot for bonuses ...and it's not only Illusion ..it's almost all my stats ..I spammed Mysticism yesterday till I hit 30 ..still couldnt use a spell that said requirement: 25 in mysticism

I will describe what green and red colored numbers in your stats mean.

(Your stats are things like willpower, intelligence, strength, agillity, personality, and endurance)

If your stat is highlighted in green that means you are 'buffed'. You have had a stat boosting spell cast on you(usually a very short lived (usually 30 seconds)fortify type spell cast on yourself), you have drank a stat boosting potion, or you have enchanted gear equiped.

If your stat is highlighted red that means it is damaged. Only powerful enemies will be able to damage your stats, and it is sometimes on a short timer. More powerful monsters will damage them untill you repair them. Another possibility is that or you ate or drank someting harmful. You need to either use a restore stat potion of the particular stat that is affected, or, visit a church - which can heal all your stats and ailaments (except maybe vampyrism) provided that you do not have a bounty on your head. You can also cure your own stats with the restoration skill, but you will need to be an expert (like level 50)

ok that makes sense ...churches wont help me as they ask me to repent my sins ..I have a clear conscience so I dont know what the hell they're talking about ;)

well it all stems from that incident where I punched a priest in the face

It's easy to take care of that. Walk up to any gaurd and he will tell you to pay the bounty on your head. Pay it. Now you are a good standing citizen again and can go to church and be blessed.

As for the "not enough magicka" - stupidly enough, it actually counts how much magic you have left, not your magic maximum. So if you had just been casting spells and your magicka is low, it will say "you don't have enough magicka" while browsing spells to purchase.

As for the skills saying level 25 etc.
There is a different system in place specifically: Novice, Journeyman, Expert, and Master. Im not sure what 'level' each one is considered but you aren't the required level. You are a Noob. :D

When you obtain any of these titles by continued use of the particular ability, you will benefit by some means. For example, if you jump up and down a few hundred times, you will eventually become a Journeyman Acrobat and can now attack while jumping, things like that. While a Journeyman of Heavy Armor gets used to wearing heavy armor all the time and while it is equipped, only 50% of the weight of it actually weighs you down anymore. A skilled sneak gets higher critical damage bonuses for attacking unsuspecting creatures. A journeyman in sneak, their footsteps can remain unheard in any footwear - even plate armor, with no noise penalty.

lol a mint.

No, thats the point. Get arrested. You are wanted. You have a bounty on your head. Walk up to the guard to turn yourself in. Pay the fine with your money, he will take you to the castle or something, and I just walked off after that - checked and my bounty was gone.

A simple assault and battery on a priest, should be no problem in this world where murdering a whole village won't set you back too bad. These were simpler times. :E
