Scientists invent 'air guitar shirt'

At last, scientists claim they have invented a genuine air guitar, so that music fans worldwide can totally rock out without the complications of needing to learn the guitar, or indeed have a guitar

That, at least, is what Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation say they've done. With Dr Richard Helmer at the helm, CSIRO say they've developed a shirt that senses its wearer's body movements ? and can translate their every strum, thrash and windmill into pure chords of rock.

Conductive fibres in the shirt transmit information from sensors in the elbow to wireless transmitters, which sends to somewhere else, where software magically turns it into music.

Wow that's awesome, although I can foresee everyone doing the Bill and Ted air guitar thing at every possible opportunity.

woah guys, I was touring a lab at Rice University and they were working on almost the exact same thing, except they were using a video camera, laser range finders and intelligent software to convert movements into an audio signal, which was then transmitted to an amplifier (I have to say, it was pretty cool).

This system is much more simple, but it looks like all you can do is trigger pre-recorded sounds to play.
