looking at all the many, many mods out there, I found one thing lacking: Mods focused entirely or mostly on storytelling, with little or no combat. Hell, even in the world of big devs this is non-existant(Half Life doesn't count as to what i'm talking about).

I'd like to ask why this is?

Remember the tram sequence of HL1, why ?an't an entire game be like that?Just simply setting an atmosphere for a place. Why can't we spend hours walking through a city, looking around with no threat of death? Does the protaganist always have to be the one shooting, instead of just watching the shooting? Can anyone give me a single reason why something like this cannot be done?

(runs toward remake-proof bunker, after realising that there probably is something like above paragraph, and the townspeople are coming to burn him at the stake)

(realises that above sentence regarding his saftey made no sense, so swallows suicide pill to ensure that most will have the common decency not to rape him )

There are a few mods focused on storytelling. They just take longer to make than gunmods.

I am going to post this here.

I have downloaded 2 mods to my sourcemods folder but can't get them to start because there is no .exe file.

It were just zip files, the mods: slums and eclipse

You restart Steam and they should show up in your My Games list.

Nope they don't show up

Also was trying another mod called: Riot act

which i installed correctly, appeared on the steam game list but when i launched the game, it crashes to desktop, the only thing showing are the opening tunes with the guy with the valve in his head.

Well i got riot act to work by just restarting my computer the rest still doesn't show up.

However Riot act does crash alot

have tried that and getting the latest direct X, but it doesn't work

Now i think this has something to do with an IDirect3DDevice9::Present() fault (This doesn't show up every time it crashes though)

because i get also some weird crashes with hl2 and episode 1

I've been having the exact same problem with Empires (another Source mod), but it doesn't seem to occur on TF2. I get a crash to Windows with a Windows error message:

Code:
Internal error in IDirect3DDevice9::Present()

I've re-installed my x1900 drivers and it still happens. I'm running the most up-to-date dx9.0c I can find.

The crash happens about 4 times out of 10, perhaps a bit more, usually when entering a level after a mapchange.

I also sometimes get a hardware crash (the PC crashes and reboots) while running Empires, which it never used to do, even on the same Empires version. This happens at seemingly random points during gameplay, and doesn't seem to be related to seeing a number of objects/objects running animations/etc. on-screen, or doing anything special in particular. It's quite possible this has nothing to do with the other software crash.

I've tried re-installing Empires from scratch including all the client patches but to no avail. I'm wondering if it's something to do with outdated code in the mod(s) that is conflicting with a more recent HL2 engine update.

Well, this is my most sucessful thread. By now, all my other(2) threads are either locked, or people have stopped posting.

Here stuff is a little off topic but, meh.

yeah, sorry for totally hijacking your thread.

But i hate making new post on forums when its not really needed.

Nah, don't worry about it, keep doin' what you're doin'with it. I don't mind.

Uhm, i find the original topic very interesting.. I prefere less violence, adrenaline and crazy stuff witch makes room for thinking, discovering misteries, game humour, clever lines. Actually the ideea of game play witch is NOT SHOOTING ! , but in fact creating a paralel world for fun and relaxation. This is why i don't like games that take over your life of waste too much of your time, or the stressfull games. Just like movies or music, games are about havin fun and relaxing, by stepping into a new world, witch can take various forms depending on the taste of the consumer. If one finds shooting stuff relaxing and amusing good for him/her, i did too some years ago,... but that doesn't mean u can't have a game based on discovering and interacting with a universe, or solving puzzles witch can be most fun for me!(see portal, my favourite ame by far!)

You're the only one.
Welcome to the club.

Now, do you know the secret handshake?

I'm currently planning a mod where there's 1 gun and you only get 1 clip for it, if that sounds interesting to you. ;)

Is the gun a rapid fire bazooka with a clip size of 99999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999?

i haven't seen a mod with an all that great story at all. Minerva and get a life have been good.

And Foster makes up Minerva as he goes.
So does Ken Levine. ;)

KL: And the plot in BioShock wasn't set. The mission structure was roughly set. The changes to the mission structure were based on "this isn't working, gameplay-wise," and not "I need to do this, story-wise."

I had somebody ask me this question yesterday, about... at the Ryan scene, because it was animation syncing and stuff, I had to come up with that really early and had it pretty much locked in place. When I do a PSA or a new audio log, I had a lot more time to do that, to write and redo and redo that.

In the same way with film, when you get on the set, the director has free license with the script, generally. He has the actors there, he has the editing room, and he can turn it into a different film, essentially. And everybody expects the director to do that.

The challenge with game writers is that people expect writing to not have any bugs. And by bugs, I mean things that could be technically better. In BioShock, we just fixed a lot more writing bugs than many other games. Narrative bugs. That's putting in more stuff, taking stuff out, redoing stuff... I was able to generate most of those bugs myself, by observing the game under development.

Ah... I remember a thread about that. "Ken Levine thinks gamers are retards", I think the thread was called.
