Model polycount question (pics inside)

Okay I'm in need of some assistance from some XSI modelers. I modeled this Inuyasha in XSI and it has 2 numbers: 6186 triangles, or 3431 polygons. Now I'm what I'm wondering is...if I convert this to triangles it shoots up the polygons to the same number as the triangles? Now I'm wondering how this would work...I saw the numbers used for Half-life 2, in polygons...but I'm wondering how it was measured...is there another program that reads the polies? I'm very confused...anyways...heres some pics:

yeah ive wondered about that myself the polycounts given by valve are in polygons but hte engine goes by the tri count so what do we follow :S lol.
i think 3431 is pretty good for a polycount tho . if ur working in poly mode the poly coutn and tri count should be fairly accurate.
btw skinning that model with those long huge sleeves is going to be helll.
 
6186 triangles, or 3431 polygons.


you need to work in triangles, games calculate triangles, not poly's
and 6186 is a bit much for a HL2 character/vehicle, whatever it is imHo

i myself try to stay under 5000 for just about everything

did you model the inside of the sleeves ? just make it a 2-sided material, lots of things on the model can be edited for a lot less triangles
 
a 2 sided material? but the arm doesn't go right into the body, wouldn't you be able to see through the model then? Heres an update on the model:

It was 6182 triangles, I've gotten it down to 5322. Is that too high still ya think? For multiplayer so if...16 of these were running around a map, would it kill the game? Crits/comments plz :)
 
you can delete the poly's of the inside of the sleeve and the border, and in the .qc file make it 2 sided
 
.qc file? is that when its compiled or something? 5180 triangles now, won't the dismembered arm seem odd when you look up sleeve in-game? Or will you notice it?
 
thats the file to import the model into HL2, there is a tutorial made from our coder on our forums www.off-limits.be marked [TUTORIAL] .. very easy to spot :o
