So, Valve chose to use Music in the game..

For me, that will ruin the games realizm..
I have watched all E3 videos of Hl2.. and when there is action going on..
you hear beats & synths.. ( music )...
Does gordon have a CD player he turns on when there is action?

I would prefer that they use Ambinent sounds only.. to improve the realism..

Now, i know Valve aimed for Realism.. but why add music?
Some would say: beacuse music gives a location a feeling..
and music makes the game much more enjoyable..
But for me, that is just ruing the game experience & realism..
I hope you can swith music On/Off

What do you prefer.. Music or Ambinent?

I don't know, I liked HL1's funky soundtrack, really got you pumped up on some of the level's. Thought ambient sounds are probably better for immersion.

HL2 actually impliments both music and ambient sounds at different times. I believe the music starts up when combat occurs. I think that you can hear the ambient sounds at the part in the e3 2k4 video where he is in that hut with the saw blades and the zombies getting chopped in half.

I think my preference depends on what is going on. Ambient sounds can really add tension to a situation, but music during a large fight can get the adrenaline pumping too :)

did you ever watch a movie? music is used to intensify the experience...don't forget this is still a GAME! (and you can turn the music off)

yes you can choose to turn the music on or off, but i wouldn't suggest it because not every single portion of the game is going to have ambient noise, and no music or ambience is just plain boring.

Pfft yeah, no one needs music, because there wouldn't be music there in real life. Everyone knows realism = a better game. :hmph: Half-Life 2 is not meant to be realistic, and where you got that notion from I'll never know. It's a sci-fi game, and as such, has many fantasy elements that happen to be unrealistic. I thought the whole realism fad had passed by now.

If you've ever listened to music (or even played a video game), you'd know that music enhances the experience a player has when playing; more so than any amount of "realism" you can throw at it.

do i smell a light breeze of sarcasm?? :cheese:

Hmm. I don't know... Ambient sounds make the world seem more life-like and realistic. Adds a lot to the immersion.

Music is good sometimes, but you really have to do it right, or else it will take you out of the game. Anyone played Deus Ex? They use music with ambient sounds, it works perfectly. And the music is cool too :)
It really does get you pumped. Especially when you gradually fade it in from the ambient sounds, and it builds up into a huge firefight.
But if it goes into options (I don't see why it wont) I'm probably turning it off.

Good topic, by the way!

i like the music in the game, it helps you concentrate on shooting.

Actually, I might just leave it on. Now that I think about it, Half-Life had awesome music. It was full of tension.

They will do like Halflife 1. Music during battles, and big event kinda things. That worked out great in HL1.

I loved the ambient sounds (properly called foley) in HL1. The whirring of motors, the dripping of water, the crackling of electricity. The game also had an exquisite sound subsystem, something I believe they improved in HL2 from listening to the wind blowing along rooftops in the GDC/HDR demo.

Looking forward for more. Actually, I think I will be turning off the music if it plays in the background all the time. I want to hear sand crunch under Gordon's boots.

If the music only plays during peak moments (like picking up a cool new weapon), like in HL1, then maybe it will stay.

Yeah, but I think there are going to be a lot more of those big event moments for some reason. But I love those sequences like in the apartments or the train station where your just exploring. It feels so cinematic. I'm betting those generally wont have music.

When i was playing HL the music would never work off the CD so i played the whole thing without music but i didnt really notice. Then i found out there WAS music on CD and some of it wasnt so bad music but i think it would spoil the game for me a bit - mainly cuz you wouldnt hear it in real life i guess (unless you were carrying around an mp3 player, Ambient all the way for me. (I especially like Track 10 - The valve [Long version] on the cd :D

Of course you can switch the music off if you want. I'll personally be having it on. It has the potential to increase the dramatic effect of certain moments in the game exponentially.

I was really bothered that Doom 3 didn't have any music actually. I feel that good music at key points really adds to games.

How about.. Ambient music? :D
As in, the electronic subgenre of music.

Seriously though, if Valve has music like they did in HL, I will love it.

hmm.. interesting thoughts..
I will have my music ON...
beacuse i want to play the game as it was ment to be played..

Depends on the feeling the designers were going for. The "Three muskateers" combat as I'll call it really benefits from exciting music. All the excitement of combat, without so much thought of horror or major, permanent consequences. The "Black Hawk Down" combat benefits from having no music, because it emphasizes the fear and uncertainty felt by soldiers in battle. Valve probably wanted to emphasize the fun parts in major battles and therefore having the beats pumping, while you're supposed to be unsettled and what not when you're fighting the zombies, so it's ambient.

That's my take anyway.

I like music better than ambient noise actually. Almost every game I play I say either "I love the music in this game" or "I wish this game played more music". I love the HL1 music, and the DX music. I even have the half life soundtrack as a play list on WMP, and play it when I play dod sometimes.

Both definetly.

In HL, the music only played when a scripted scene or big fight happened. I think HL2 will be the same.

Valve has expert game designers, they know when to add music to make the game extremelly fun and when to leave it out to add immersion. I will entrust my gaming experience with them more than anyone else, and thats including myself for the first time I play the game.
