N00b question.. I guess

Now this whole time I've been under the impression that the teleport room at the end of HL2 where Breen was in his little bubble and the dark energy reactor room you get to contain in EP1 are 2 completely different rooms in different areas of the citadel, right? it's not the same room that has been bathed in radioactivity and somehow lowered deeper into the citadel...

please shed some light on my stupidity ;(

Your first impression is correct, as Breen's teleport reactor at the top of the Citadel has been blown into oblivion. The Core found in EP1 is found in a lower section of the Citadel.

What I don't get is why both are surely refered to as "the core", or are they not? I mean, you can't have two cores Is that just something that fans have designated the original teleport chamber as, or does anyone actually call it the core in the game?

The HL2 core (rechristened as "Breen's reactor" in EP1) powers the Combine's tunneling entanglement device. On the other hand, the EP1 core (refered to as the Core) serves as the Citadel's main power source.

You blew the Dark Fusion reactor/teleport up in HL2. However, they both draw power from the Citadel Core.
