Allright. Here's how it stands. I haven't kept up to the times with all the new computer technology so I no longer know what a decent value is. I finally got enough dough for a computer. Potentially like 1100 bones. I need a computer that can run lots of processes at once, can do lots of word processing kind of stuff ( I'm going back to school so I'm gonna have to do a lot of projects with it :S) and one that is pretty good for gaming on. I've always dreamed of being able to play halflife 2 and etc. on max settings without it destroying me. Any kind of advice or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

With $1,100, your options are pretty wide. I would suggest building your own, but if you don't feel comfortable with that, buy a company-made with 2 GB of RAM and a dual-core CPU. Then feel free to spend the other cash on a video card.

Buy a computer that would be ready for HL2 ep2.
A decent dx10 card, 2Gb of mem and the rest will follow.
keep your eyes open for a core 2 due quad price cut.

They're not implementing DX10, at least at release. It would be overkill, but good to have.
