NOTHING WORKS - all the entities lose texture!

Hi, thanks for hearing me out. Whenever I make a HL2 map, and run it, it works fine for a couple of seconds and then all of the entities lose their texture, and the menu loses it's text so you can't see which buttons you're pressing. It comes up with the message on loading the map : ''Node Graph out of Date. Rebuilding...''. Also, the lighting and effects are all screwed up - even if I don't include ANY lights in a room, it's perfectly lit with no shadow, and if I do a bloodstream effect or similar, it doesn't appear...
I've included the info_player_start entity, which is the only nessecary one as far as I know. What do I do?
 
We're not sure. Nobody's posed a good answer yet.

But try running the game via Steam instead of via Hammer.

Very few.

So few, in fact, that whenever I've asked about it, everybody else has just kinda stared at me like I'm an idiot. :P Here's a thread with a like problem, though perhaps a different manifestation (my screen goes to pastels most of the time instead of black-white).
 
It's cosmic vengeance. You used the Carve button, and Azathoth isn't pleased.

This happened to me, (at least I think it was the same problem, I am a total newb to map making and hammer) in my case pressing ` for the console and then typing 'buildcubemaps' worked. I'm not sure what that does, but it gave everything back.
 
buildcubemaps is a command to tell the engine to take pictures around the env_cubmap entities to be used for reflections.
