HL3 could use Source as far as Im concerned, Source is a great engine and there is no need for a new one.

I do want to to know what happens, but there is value in waiting.

HL's role in the industry has become to set benchmarks and break new ground. VALVe knows this, which is why they're not going to dive right in to HL3. I'm afriad we have to wait But just think about how far they came from HL1, and how f'n awesom HL3 will be..
