Ever wondered about why the numbers we use look like they do?

I learned this a few years ago, I just remembered recently when my friend talked about some bullshit spirituality to numbers. This is not bullshit spirituality, this is what they were meant to look like (at least I think so).

The straight vertical line means non-attachment, the straight horizontal line means attachment, and the curve means love.

The 1 is the mineral state. A straight vertical lign signifies detachment from all things.

The 2 is the vegetal state. A horizontal line on the bottom signifies the attachment to the earth, and a curve on the top signifies love for the sun.

The 3 is the animal state. The animal is confined neither to the ground or to the sky, but he loves both the safety of the ground and the freedom of the sky.

The 4 represents humans. Humans are at a crossroad, as shown by the cross formed by the 4. We choose to either be a 3, or we can be a 5.

The 5 is the sage. The sage is attached to the sky, but he loves the earth.

Can you guess the next ones? I will post them if no one can.

BTW: This works with girls ;), sometimes.

I have to use that, that is if I remember the symbols.

Nice find

8 seems obvious, i hope, a love for both earth and sky; attached to niether...

The rest 7, 9, 6, are hard. Maybe 7 is attached to both, loving niether, but nine and six are strange in that system. Maybe loving the earth more than the sky, and that inverted.

8===holy man?
7 bird?

Birds are animals, nub.

Okay, next one.

6 is the angel. The guardian angel is now free from all attachments, but with one swooping curve he loves and helps humans.

Darn, I was thinking animals=land animals, leaving room for fish and birds, as this is something from a people with a primitive understanding of nature, right?

7 is the student god. In order for this to work you need to know the traditional 7 has a bar through the middle (which is how most people write it). The student god is attached to the sky and must make the right choice to progress to the next level.

I don't get this at all, but it is interesting :P

"Spiritual meanings" with no basis in fact for Western numerals could only come from the evil that is The Mind Of A 14-year-old Emo Girl. That's my explanation. Die, emo freaks! I smite you!

Lol, you had me going then, thought 2hrs of BF2 had led to some major changes here :hmph:

I think 8 means that the animals are like the T-Rex or something.

"Western numerals" just shows how much you know about "fact." The numeral system we use today is anything but western.

We use it in the west, ergo Western. Like our Western alphabet. It's officially called Arabic, I know; but, as I understand it, the Orient and other parts of the East have their own numeral systems. I can replace Western with Arabic in the original post if it'll make you feel better.

It is interesting that the United States National Library of Medicine (the Islamic branch, at any rate) considers the Arabic numeral system to be--wait for it--the numeral system currently in use in the Arabic world. 0 through 9 are the Western numerals.
