PlanetHalfLife are reporting that an interesting article has been put up on FiringSquad detailing about some nVidia chipset graphics cards not being able to run DirectX 9. Here's a snip:
Auto detection is also good for those who don’t have the patience to tweak the plethora of visual settings present within Half-Life 2. Checkboxes for model, texture, water, and shadow detail are located within the video section’s advanced menu, while anti-aliasing and texture filtering can also be adjusted here. This still doesn’t include the console! It can all be pretty intimidating if you don’t know what any of these settings does.[br]

Arguing the case for auto detection is an easy one, clearly it benefits all parties. But what happens if end users are forced down one set path, and aren’t allowed to adjust certain settings? This appears to be the case for GeForce FX card owners.
The article is very well written and seems to have an unbiased view point of the classic nVidia vs ATi arguments.[br]

I love how they completely misunderstand HDR and misuse the term over and over and over. GG FiringSquad!

It is very disappointing to see the 5900Ultra forced into Directx8.1, end users should have the freedom to choose.

Can't they just put "-dxlevel 90" in the launch options for CS:S?

... or does it actually limit those cards to (instead of just suggesting) 8.1 or lower?

Then why does the GeForce 6800 run fine?

The FX series was really not very good compared to the ATI cards released at the same time. The new 6800's though are much better and will be able to really compete with ATI's most recent cards.

Exactly, you nVidia people have to get over it, nVidia were pretty stupid when they made the FX series. But now they've come back, maybe even to convert me next time I buy a video card.

But why physically force it though, i can understand the reasons behind them making it auto detect as a 8.1 card, but i would like the option to move it up to 9.0 if possible and i can't understand why i wouldn't be allowed to do that. My card is fully capable of running Directx9 at a playable frame rate for Halflife2, so i would like the opportunaty to do that.

Because if they force it as a directx 9 mode it will run like crap.
