Old studdering problem

I just bought Half Life 2 recently, and im getting what i have found out to be the infamous studdering problem. Half Life 2 is completely updated, but yet i still get the problem, not only for a few seconds, but it can completely freeze up the game. Ill sometimes get an error box about the index buffer. What should i do?
