Hi people, I am playing half life 2 in 1024x768 high detail... you know, the fps seemed to be well up to the heavy combat scene with an helicopter, before the east of black mesa level, here are my specs:

p4 1.7ghz, 512 sdram, 40gb, radeon 9550 OC from 250/200 to 400/200 (seems to be stable in other games such as far cry, but I get restart's when exiting to windows)

Well, how can I prevent the restarts?

What should I change in the config to gain performance, but lose the minimun posible detail level?

I can't acces the console with ~ key, also, if I start with -console, I have half life version 1.0.1.0, but I am still getting those sound problems, and I don't have +snd_async_prefetch_priority command.

I've tried that famous benchmark, and heapsize doesn't makes any difference at all in fps (also I can't use that comand in console)

Then, I get really long "loading" screens, about 3 or 4 min, I have defragmented, that helped a lot (thanks to the last post).

PD, My radeon 9550 it's a powercolor one, with 256mg, how can I get advantage of the large amount of memory in it?

Thanks!

The loading screens are long but 3-4 min sounds a little outrageous. Maybe it's because you have SDRAM (?). Could it be that you are overestimating? Luckily I've had 1024 of PC3200 the whole time so the loading takes at the most a minute.

I don think it's sdram problem, but the heapsize makes no diference..... well, at least in the benchmark

Meh, I just thought it might be makin his load times a little longer.

I can believe the 3-4 minute loading times, I used to get those before I bought another 512mb of RAM (I have 1024MB PC3200 now). Putting medium textures on will cut the loading times significantly (it did for me anyway) but the best thing for me was buying more RAM, now I can play with high quality textures and bearable load times (about a minute for most maps).

well, I'll try to see how many ram does hl2 uses..... but I think even with 1024 and my other hardware I won't have better performance... just loading times

Well, any idea about the other problems?
