Alright, first of all my computer specs- 2.0 ghz Intel, 512 2100PC RAM, Radeon 9800 pro.

Problem is , i can't get descent FPS in hl2. It doesn't go very far...its like a slide show in combat sometimes. Anyhow, ive tried the tweaking guides, did everything possible to tweak it, tried mostely every ATI driver. Tried many , many programs...It just refuses to work well...And I had a steady 60 fps in Farcry on high settings, I never got anything lower than a 55.

So does anyone have any ideas for me?

2.0 GHZ intel sucks. That's like my old 1.2 AMD, or even worse.

But I do believe Giant is right with the PC2100. Get better if your MB supports it. Else get a new one, new processor and get the new PC3200 Ram with it.

HL2 is pretty heavy on the CPU and loading from Harddrive/memory.

Close any program you don't need open and defrag your harddrive. Make sure you have a good chunk of free harddrive space as well.

Does your system take awhile to boot? That might mean that there are a lot of services loading which will run in the background. You can disable programs from starting by going to "start/run" and typing 'msconfig'. You can reset it back to how it was if you want to change it back.
Also make sure you are clean of Virus/spyware junk.

I have 2.2 gHz P4, Radeon 9800 Pro, and 768 MB of RAM, and it runs Half-Life 2 like a dream. I can usually get away with 2xAA and 4xAF at around 30 fps, which is good enough for me.

you're way off about the Pentium. I have a 2.0 Ghz and it runs better than my friend's 2.0 AMD

Asus ive done all that, my computer doesn't take a while to boot, and like I said I ran Farcry at a constant 60 fps at high settings...

It is the cpu - the heavy fights in HL2 bring even the beefiest cpu's to their knees.

My friends 3800 a64 hits around 40 fps in the most hectic areas.

update just came out, fixes the stuttering, and it really fixes it this time!
