Playing off line

Do I have to wait (it's driving me nuts) until Steam tries to update and then I have the option of starting off line. But this can take quite a while, so... my question, is there any way to cut down the wait. I don't want to do any thing illigal, just don't want to wait for 5 plus mins to play the single player game. :angry:
