i think theres something wrong with this plot in HL2
when u meet Barney...
well its barney calhoun, in blueshift, at the start of the tram ride.... gordon works in a completely different section of the BMRF than him. and you never see each other in HL1... so how come they seem to know each other?
or is it because gordon worked up a name for himself in HL1 and became popular and famous and starred in TV commercials and spnsored products for companies so barney heard about him?
or is it barney's clone?

Barney was used as a collective name for all the police guys in HL1.

I think the story is that Barney knew Gordon from working at Black Mesa together. Just because they never came in direct contact that faitful day doesn't mean they were total strangers.

possibly... he probably saw him in a mentos commercial aswell.

Exactly, in OP4 theres a pic of Gordon on the wall as "Employe of the week" or something like that. He was a good scientist....now hes a headcrab killin badass.

Well, in HL1, you didn't start out on Gordon's first day. Gordon had already worked there for a little while, so Barney Calhoun might've met him before.

and the other barneys in the BMRF could have told the orginal host(Barney Calhoun) to buy gordon a beer

No. There were scientists and then there were barney security guards (+ gman). OpFor introduced Otis the fat security guard.

However, Gearbox (and thus Valve as they directed the storyline) made the first guard at the very very start of HL into the protagonist of Blue Shift, and so this specific barney is Barney Calhoun as seen in HL2.

The picture in OpFor is Employee of the Month.

.... There is a problem with your theory flo_Orian
Gordon was removed from the picture after HL1 up until HL2 starts.

And your just plain sickening.

I haaaaaate this conversation lol.

My way of seeing Valves vision is that all the Barneys from HL1 were Barney Calhoun. Not just the guy from blueshift who never meets Gordon and never fights alongside him.

Its to damn corney* to believe that Barney Calhoun went to Xen (happens in blueshift - without any oxygen suit I might add) and did all this other stuff.

Its more acceptable* that Barney Calhoun was the guy who was always there with you in black mesa, even though the game engine couldnt really allow a proper npc experience such as that.

*at least to me.

Yeah, Barney probably knew Gordon from Before, heck, they might have lunch together before...

Gordon didn't have a helmet on in Xen, and Xen aliens survive in earth's atmosphere just fine. I believe it's safe to assume that Humans can breath in Xen's atmosphere, so I see no reason why Barney couldn't have gone to Xen.

nononono. it was a love triangle

barney and the gaman were in a relationship.

each secretly loved gordon.

the gman staged the entire incedint to get rid of barney so he could hit on gordon. when the gman got gordan to work for him at the end, he drugged him until he could use him....

the gman saw that barney wasnt dead, so he created the combine to take over the world so that it would be easier to search for him. and then he got bored of gordan and shacked up with breen and let him take over city 17 the week freeman was in town

Well, this is one of those things that i'll suspend my disbelief a little...

Yeah suppose but its still a horrid story plot to know that Barneys been to Xen as well, the whore of the universe...

Btw I only replied so I could say 'Like a big fat cow, all walking on 2 legs and stuff you know?'

Actually, Gordon does have a helmet (It was just never shown on the SP model for some reason), but I see no problem with Barney Calhoun going to Xen; as has been said, the Xenians could breathe perfectly well here, why wouldn't a human breathe okay on Xen?

I see no Plot problems here... carry on then.

Seriously, the birth of Barney was purely accidental, he was a side character(s) that everyone fell in love with.

Bugger me, it would've been one hell of a first day, wouldn't it?

Anyway loathe as I am to flaming, this thread is needlessly pedantic. It's perfectly possible they knew each other and I don't quite see how this would be a significant plot-hole in any way shape or form.

Barneys were the general term given to the security guards at Black Mesa.

However after Blue-shift I always thought that they instead made the term 'barney' refer to only one guard (barney carholun, not the spelling I know) the one that escaped.
Valve didn't make this particular sequence of events but hasn't it been more or less concluded (from E3 2003) that barney is an actual character in the game? Unless he is just one of many like before...?

It's been stated in a couple of previews that the Barney in HL2 is Barney Calhoun from Blue Shift, who was the ... distillation of all the Black Mesa "Barney" security guards, just like Adrian Shepherd was the distillation of the Marines.

I always thought Gordon was the bridge between braun and brain. After all, the scientists were snobby to the guards and Gordon. And the fact that Gordon was so popular with the guards ("Hey catch me later and I'll buy you a beer") means that he would of met Barney Calhoun, and all his mates more often at lunch and the evenings more than he would hang around the scientists. He was one of the guys, and it shows in the Barricade video.

Plus, Gordon seems to have become rather famous since he saved the world from Nihilanth's invasion. He could be a kind of celebrity in the future, especially amoung the former BMRF employees. Even if they never actually met in person.

Like that beret-wearing dude that was on all those posters years ago... a symbol. Something Geuvara, or however his name was spelt...

Barney used to be just the name of the HL security guard npc model, it's easier to say Barney instead of security guard npc ;) Later on it became the name of a certain security guard - Barney Calhoun.
