Portal Gun in Half Life 2

Yeah, some one modded it, and just played the level with it, probably in Gmod =/.
 
The problem I see with the portal gun in a standard combat situation though is that it wouldn't seem to be much use.

Portal around behind everything, portal a strider to the ground (leg goes in, hard to get back up) portal your enemies into elsewhere, etc.
 
Yeah yeah, but in combat do you want to shoot a portal behind someone or just shoot them in the face? Once you are behind someone they just turn and shoot anyway so you take fire to get minimal advantage later.
Imagining that a Strider would step into the hole would seem to assume a certain level of stupidity from them.
Yes you could port someone off someplace but unless the place you put them kills them you've not achieved much really, just avoided a situation and not necessarily for very long. I'm failing to see a big advantage here.
 
Just set up a portal right under where they're standing. Exit Portal wherever you want.
 
I'm not leaving the portal open like an open sewer for them to fall into. I'm shooting it under their foot...thing...spear.
 
If Valve plans to make the Portal gun available in the remainder of Half Life 2, I say go for it. Even though it would not pose practical for combat, it will still be useful for puzzles. Creating a balance, for example, you would not totally abandon the gravity gun per say, because the gravity gun deems more useful in combat as you can pick up items such as explosive canisters, barrels, and saw blades, and propel them toward enemies, but can still hold its own for specific puzzles.
 
Using the Portal gun would make Ravenholm a hundred times more fun than it already is. Portal hole a fast zombie into a fire? Heck yeah!
 
Its awesome - just played around with it then. Some things are a little off as you would expect (the rocket launcher and the gravity gun while standing in a portal for example). Throwing explosive barrels through Portals is win. You can have some fun with the crossbow - for instance place the Portals opposite each other, fire (it can't hit you) and watch it fly between them as gravity pulls it to the ground.
 
Hmm, they'd have to put LOTS of health packs thugh =|

You'd be getting shot WAY too much before killing your enemy. BTW, that 'screen shot' means nothing, unless there's a clip in EP 3 with the SAME scene in Early HL2.
 
You guys haven't mentioned the craziest part. They say you can use this with HL2: Deathmatch. Insanity!

*EDIT* Nevermind, they haven't figured out how to make it work with true multiplayer yet. You can only use it by yourself on the DM maps.
 
but the real question is.... can you see yourself? i.e. gordon freeman using the portals?? Anyone know?
 
This is just Portal using the HL2 maps. HL2 weapons and NPCs are in Portal, you can't go multiplayer, since Portal is a singleplayer game. And no, you only see Chell through portals.
 
ah i see, I thought this thread was referring to the portal gun being spawned or whatever in half-life 2 and it being played with it. Never mind me, carry on

Even if it was the Portal gun imported to HL2 i Belive we would just see a black textured model. That is anyway how the player model looks in the files
 
If the Portal gun was imported/modded into HL2, then you would just see a blank texture. I'm pretty sure that valve hasn't yet made a Gordon Freeman Model.
If you're playing it the way described in the first post, then as you are technically playing ig IN Portal, the player model would be Chell.

Quick and simple mod idea if there is ever a portal SDK: Change the player model to freeman and add all the hl2 maps properly. Make a the barrels into storage cubes and Alyx into a Floating Companion cube.

Harder mod idea: Make it so that the NPC's can actually be affected by the portals.
 
Ant lions

i hate ant lions. i liked it when we got to control them in half life 2. but in episode 2 they were such a pain.

i though it was really cool how they incorporated aperture scince into half life 2. i really hope that the protal gun comes into play in episode 3. i know there has been the use of portals in half life before but the portal gun would spice things up a bit haha.

also, does anyone know if like valve had this whole story planned out like when they were only on the original half life game for PC. because it was awesome how they talked about the stalie gordon launched back at balck mesa which i remeber doing in the original half life game. and then this satalite enabled the rocket launched in episode 2 to do its job. so does anybody know like if this whole plot and story was already planned out years ago?

Planned years ago? Probably up to a point.
At the time of the original Half-Life? I doubt it.
