Does anyone know how many copies of HL2 have been preordered through Steam?

I'm not sure, but there have been over 2 million preloads

2 million preloads... take away a couple hundred thousand .... 1.2 1.3 preorders? eh? no? Am i too far off?

About 2 Million Copies sold off steam that i have heard.

I also heard 2 mill preorders from steam. Alittle more in stores 700,000 maybe = it just beat halo 2

No i thought GameSpot Said that Steam Sold $2 million copies but that isnt from stores

Maybe i am who you think i am.

Don't forget the people who have the ATI coupons. The board makers only had to pay $10/coupon, so valve probably lost 10-40 thousand full purchases.

Kalaq - the board makers paid Valve $10-15 (I thought it was 15) per coupon. That is the same profit margin they get from a retail sale (or perhaps a little less - they might have to share some with VUG).

But either way, a graphics board coupon would give them the same actual profit that a retail copy would. However the overall sales value is much lower, and it's the overall value that gets reported, rather than the profit.

I highly doubt that there are more preorders for HL2 than for Halo 2. There are far more people who have an xbox than those who have a PC that can run this game. I think the 2 million number is how much money the preorders have already brought in. Halo 2 sold over 2.4 million units on the first day and made over $125 million. No way in hell HL2 will match those numbers. MAYBE in the long long term Half-Life will outsell Halo 2 because there will be a new xbox system and hopefully we'll see some great mods similar to the first CS that will help boost sales for years to come. However, i have my doubts. Half-Life 2 may be an amazing single player experience and one of the great games of all time, but to assume that we'll see the same long term sales is not a sure bet.

Someone should email valve & ask how many steam packages have been sold by the end of the 16th (steam 1st day sales + steam preorders).

I just sent valve their $60 paycheck.

It was actually 10$ which is a lot for a bundled game.

I would highly doubt VUG would ever let valve get all the profits from any deal they made with a third party. The % given to Valve vs VUG might be a little different then the retail, but VUG is surely still the winner.
