I have noticed something that I'm sure you have too. One problem with games today is that people get obsessed with them and rush through the game in like a day or two, Which has the potential to ruin the experience. I rushed through GTA: San andreas (took me about 3 days) and I'm trying not to make the same mistake with HL2. Do you guys have any experience/comments regarding this issue?

Chris

I rushed through HL2 in three days,. and now I'm playing it again. This game is so freakin fun, complex, and full of variety that I'm sure I could play through it another half a dozen times without getting bored.

Usually I dont mind games being short, as by the time I get there I've had enough of it. HL2 is a definite exception.

it is true that today's shooters seem to be shorter than older ones.

this is something you can observe in almost all "next generation" shooters, from halo and unreal 2 to doom 3 and hl2 - they tend to become more movie-like, the level design is more fancy, but less complicated. why do i say movelike? well, because in action movies you dont usually see the hero running around looking for a vent for 2 hours, like you would in an hl1-movie ;)

personally i dont mind, if the game is so replayable as hl2 is.

or, maybe the level design didnt change, but i got better at finding vents :farmer:

eh, half life 2 is great but it is still very linear. i have still to beat it though i am at the 2nd to last chapter. started playin the day it came out. it has a lot of things u can do with physics but regardless , a lot of doors wont open, a lot of parts of the map u cant go to, it isnt as adventuruous that way as some say. far cry let u go anywhere. me and my roommate beat maps like 3 different ways by going different directions and areas first etc. but yeah, i dont like to rush right thru it, takes away from the game. i have been enjoying it a lot playin a few horus a day.

Although I loved the source engine and all of its complex ways to do a puzzle and the dynamic effects it produces...I play FPS's mostly for the story.
Unreal 2 still has the best story. IMO

I think games designers want to start looking at making the FPS much less linear. Always give us different ways to reach goals. Always give us a choice of what objective needs to be done first, if at all, and let the story work around it.

Nowadays, with the technology we got, all it takes is more time designing and programming.

Tho as far as linear games go, HL2 still rocks :afro:
