Are Advisors are like gigantic psychic maggots or something? They don't look like robotos but more like gigantic insects/maggots that take away your memory and paralyze you. What are they exactly?

They are some species that may or may not be in control of the universal union we refer to as the combine.

They are psychic creatures that may have turned into a slug-like state due to super dependence on their tech, though IMO they where always slug-like.

From 'Half-Life 2 Raising the Bar';

Combine Advisor
"In designing this character we wanted to suppose that an organism not unlike humans, began to depend on the technology that was originally created to improve it's quality of life. Over the course of it's evolution, it became grublike, with limbs no longer able to support it's own weight, eyes too feeble to see without aid, a body now incapable of movement, fully dependent on the technology that it created. It was, however, incredibly evolved in it's ability to reason, invent, and dominate the minds and cultures of other beings. This design was also in part inspired by the writings of Frank Herbert."
- Ted Backman

It makes you wonder if the advisor's are really have telekinesis or if its just a technology that they've developed

The infant in the shed doesn't have those big devices on its back, and yet seems quite capable of folding metal barrels up, and pinning things to walls.

I dunno, my theory was that they where always grub like. (This is before I have ever heard otherwise) They had limited psychic abilities on the other creatures in their world, practically limited to "warding" them away, similar to how some insects use bad smell, stinging toxin, etc. They where intelligent and able to reason, and eventually either discovered some technologies or where influenced by another race, and developed into the technologically advanced race we see today.
